Ok, so im gonna be visiting home to Detroit this summer and I just booked a flight with Virgin Australia in Premium Economy because it is currently the same price as economy (Qantas currently has premium economy for the same price as economy as well)

So here is why I chose Virgin.

1.) Im a Velocity member

2.) The price for Virgin and Qantas were the same

2.) its more direct. Qantas would have had me do this:
MEL - SYD (where I get on the 747 to Dallas)- DFW (where I then would get one of those tiny American Connection planes for another 3 hour flight) - DTW

with virgin its MEL-LAX on the 777 and LAX to DTW on a 767. easy stuff.

So here is my question: What is the deal with the Virgin Premium Economy thing??? Ive been reading TONS of negative reviews for Virgin's premium economy. I don't feel any regrets about booking it because like I said, its the same price as economy, and i called qantas and all their Isle seats (except for the last row) were taken, PLUS I hear the premium economy product on the Qantas 747 is nothing like their A380

So I guess tell me bout this stuff? What does Qantas do thats so much better than Virgin, and what makes the Virgin product so bad? I was really excited to snag this deal until i started reading reviews about Virgin... but none of them ever say WHY. They just cough about it

What was the cost and dates? PE for the same price as Y seems like a great deal. Doesn't sound like you can lose. I haven't flown VA or QF PE though.

We flew VA PE on our 2012 trip to the US and I recommend it and would happily fly it again, in fact I'm going to book PE seats again in a few months. Yes I'm hoping to upgrade to J but if we can't, I happy with PE. I landed at LAX rested.

I can't comment on Qantas but I found the VA seat comfortable, the FAs never left us wanting, what else do you want on a flight. My only negative would be the four middle row seats but we had two seats on the side.

Hey so I'm flying MEL to DTW on June 26th and returning July 13th.
Virgin was 3k round trip (what was actually 100 cheaper than economy) and Qantas was like 3.5k which was only about 200 more than economy

Id book fast though. all the good seats are almost gone (I took the last isle seat on both Virgin flights

If you have already bought the tickets then perhaps you might like to let us know about your VA PE experience with photos would be nice.

oh i think the virgin PE class is perfectly fine. of course, i'd rather fly J. But hey - great deal!

Oh - I'm sorry. J = Business class. There's a lot of acronyms/codes here to learn! ;)

Qantas PE is much more like a J- than a Y+. Also, going via DFW you would get a refurb 747 and its the same PE cabin as what you would get on the A380 (all the ER series 744's are refurb from memory). It might not be as direct but its more comfortable. YMMV though.

I cant speak for Virgin PE but I have only heard bad things about it from collegues and friends.

Certainly can be aircraft dependant for such evaluation, whether QF or VA.
IME there is nothing 'bad" about VA PE hard or soft product.

I flew both within the last year although the Virgin experience was not with PE service, as far as the hard product goes I think they are comparable. The QF product is no different between aircraft, the only caveat is on the non refurb the first row sucks.

Flew MEL-LAX in PE three weeks ago. The seat is fine for a daytime flight and the service is quite personal. Our FA kept topping our champagne up with the 'good stuff' from J cabin.

I'm off to LAX with VA in PE in 4 weeks so I'll let you know! I'll be happier for a smaller quieter cabin and a bit more leg room. Everything else is a bonus!

We have flown VA in Premium Economy to Abu Dhabi several times now and I think it is a great. Beats economy any day. Better food, much more room and the service has been faultless.

I have flown the VA PE a couple of times now and find it a good product - comfortable seats, good recline, footrests, decent headphones etc. Service in the 40 person cabin is good - drink on sitting, meal order taken (outstanding service when there was a mistake and I missed out on what I ordered), bar area, nightcap etc
