Virgin Australia Delays/Cancellations

Thanks mate - ended up being shambles. She was the last to be booked for a hotel and they took around 2.5 hours. Fortunately she was in a decent hotel. As you mentioned it was a self service hotel link but they asked her to remain at the airport.

On Friday 21 July, SYD has again instituted single runway operations using the east-west runway.

VA931 (B738 VH-YFT, the 1000 hours SYD-BNE) was in the mid stage of taxiing as at 1126 hours, so will be at least 70 minutes late arriving in the Queensland capital.

VA515 (1020 hours SYD-OOL) was just behind it, about to join the queue.

These delays will continue to compound (affecting a fair swathe of national flights) if the single runway operations continue into the Friday afternoon.

UPDATE: As at 1134 AEST, the north-south runways looked to be reopening.

Not good on SYD-MEL this morning. Cancellations to the 0600, 0645 and 0830 services so far. Almost everything else well over an hour late.

Funnily enough, I was just looking at B738 VH-YIE (the 0630 hours MEL-CNS) that had only just taken off at about 0824 hours and thinking 'there's some fog in MEL and while quite a lot of planes are now incurring a holding pattern, it hasn't really caused any significant delays yet to departing aircraft'.

It’s still very foggy in the eastern parts of Melbourne now
Hopefully the airport is good enough. I will be in trouble if I don't get to work (eventually!). Mid-air now, the captain did say a lot of extra fuel thrown on in preparation for the possibility of a lot of holding. But at least I got on a flight even if in a middle seat. One of the lounge attendants was pretty useless in Sydney, but the other an absolute angel. Real Jekyll and Hyde stuff!

And as I type the engines throttle down. I guess the pacing and holding begins!

Monday 25th of September had VA824 (B738 VH-YQO) SYD-MEL with a medical emergency delay which made this aircraft arrive at 11 50, 75 tardy. The leg carried the delay further on for VA267 MEL-CBR and the return leg that I was on today which was VA268. We landed at 15 34, 44 tardy which is not terrible. Crew and staff at the lounge kept us timely informed.

BNE shut down for all tarmac ops this afternoon 28/09 acc thunderstorms from 1345 - still waiting for resumption at 1510 and no sign of it clearing yet.

Can imagine that the knock on effects along the East coast will be pretty bad.

Many anxious pax here trying to get to MEL for the Grand final.

Some are even flying BNE-CNS-NEL to get there but they are still stuck in BNE too.

even VA 9004 is delayed - that is the Lions flight... hope they can catch up in the air

Heard an aircraft go over the top of my house after 11pm which is very rare.
Turns out VA471 PER-BNE was diverted to ADL.
Aircraft rego of VH-8IA and is the new Maxy

Probably one of the worst around today.

VA332 BNE-MEL diverted Avalon.

155pm departure from BNE. Currently going on 11pm and the aircraft is still on the ground at Avalon with pax onboard.
That's odd, it was a perfect day in Melbourne yesterday. Reason for divert?

Edit: seems it got a bit windy as the day went on at Tullamarine. Windshear. Not the only one to divert

Well apparently they needed a new set of crew and was nobody at Avalon to let them in. So stuck on the ground from 5pm-12am.

Amazing it didn’t make the news. If it was QF would be all over Breakfast TV.

Me and hubby off to Bali today BNE -DPS - flight cancelled at gate. Funnily enough some PAX were lucky enough to be routed via Melbourne. Me and hubby both downgraded to Economy and cant go until tomorrow, not even offered the Mel route despite us both being Platinum. VA staff said operational, crew issues.

Showing it departed at 1145am? 2hrs late?

According to the seat map on Expert Flyer, it was completely empty. No passengers.

The whole schedule is an utter mess today. An awful lot of cancellations for a day with no major weather disruptions, many delays too. Assuming it’s crewing issues (tech/cabin crew). The VA flight status message would concur — ‘Operational Reasons’ listed for most of the cancellations.

Either they have had some form of internal systems failure today, or nobody wants to work today.

You’re not wrong. Pretty much all flights from Melbourne today are delayed or cancelled.

This carrier seems to be going backwards operationally, and it’s been that way for a good year plus now. Seems like the attitude is nobody gives a rats as it’s about to be floated.

VH-YIY, the B738 operating this afternoons VA1746 ASP-ADL, appears to have departed and then turned back to ASP, currently remaining on the ground with no replacement flight plan visible.
Reason unknown, however recovery options would be very limited.
Although VA’s own flight status page still has it arrived ADL, FR24 tracking suggests otherwise and the service the aircraft was scheduled to operate onward from ADL is cancelled.
