Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

Had my first domestic J flight today (MEL-SYD) really enjoyed the pre departure mocktail. Had a nice chickpea salad, with (among other things) pumpkin, feta, artichokes - really nice flavours and best domestic cold meal I've had in a long time. Desert was some sort of coca-pops inspired rocky road dish. The other lunch option was some fish dish.

VA account on linkedin mentioned something about new menu being launched today for business class pax. Any idea what is it ?

Looks like I just missed out on the new menu, so here's the weekend meals:

Vegetarian burrito (not mine - eaten by the person I was travelling with)

Salmon. Not bad - not as dried out as salmon served at altitude can often be.

Duck pie with pea mash. Very good, but also very filling.

The flight with the duck pie also had a vegetarian curry as the alternative. We both had the duck pie on that particular flight.

BNE-MEL today 1.55pm
I thought flights between noon and 2pm were lunch flights? This was a snack flight.
Very small sausage roll (alternative was an Arabic mezze plate - I should have chose that), bread roll and a 'blood orange' ice cream thing that was too hard to eat and once I did manage a bite, I couldn't eat it. Was too sweet.

BY the way, does anyone else find the J seats on the 738s to be very uncomfortable? Especially in row 1. I just can't get comfy no matter how I contort myself.

I find them fine.

Unlike QF there are no leg rests, but I hardly ever use them anyway. If you don't like leather you may not like them period; also more rotund people may or may not struggle to do up the belt. But if you don't mind QF's new claret red J seats, then the VA ones aren't too different.

To me, they're fairly firm - but not uncomfortably so. Not a seat I'd want to be in for several hours, but for shorter flights they're more than adequate. :)

Arrhhh yes good old F.W.P. number 871 ..... the dreaded non comfy Virgin Australia row one seats issue.

Remind me ...that comes right between first world problem number 870 .... Having to tick the yes box when you actually are taking more than $10,000 in hard currency out of the country.
and number 872 .... The frappe that you bought has a straw smaller than chocolate chips in it. ............that's right isn't it ?

I had a rather disappointing J flight yesterday, SYD-MEL. I was booked on the 7pm and flew ahead on the 4:30pm.

Had been stuck on the tarmac for about an hour due to lightening on the runway (which was completely fine, especially sitting in J), but it wasn't until we got into the air that I was told there weren't enough meals for me. Now, it's not the end of the world, and I know that they only had 1.5 hours to cater, but it did annoy me just a little when everyone else was tucking into their (deliciously smelling) pies and salads.

Is this common? Because it seems like a rather major flaw that would make me think twice about doing another J flight when my Y snack is essentially the same.

I flew ADL - SYD on Tuesday and had excellent service. The meal was reasonable, but it was the service by the cabin supervisor that was really a step above.

The only strange thing was that I rang up for an upgrade using one of my upgrade credits. I was assigned 2D. The seat selection held up right to the moment I checked in when I found myself without a seat selection. I think I was bumped by a VIP (that's what they said when they opened the door in Sydney to the ground crew), but I had no idea who he was.

I think they're fabulous. Perfect for me - but I do have a bit of padding on the backside :)

If you're going to trot out the tired old 'first world problem' line, then you'd be doing a lot of that on this site.
To the posters who posted something constructive, yes, it's the leather. I find a bit hard, but I agree it's a nice problem to have.

That's the rub with Fly Ahead - catering can't be assured - so I make sure I eat in the Lounge. As Cayering is off-site, they may not have the time to rush another meal to the Terminal and get it loaded on the plane.

You should have been offered something to eat from the Y Menu?

I had the same issue a couple of weeks ago when flying ADL/BNE but was able to get 2A reinstated. This is content for a whole new thread as it seems to be happening a bit lately.

Perhaps, but can I ask, how were you ticketed into Business? Paid J, upgrade, award...?

I am starting to surmise that Virgin has a different focus to Qantas with regards to "sticky" seating. And it's a "game changer" for losing my business if Virgin doesn't correct it!

When I fly domestic business on Virgin, sometimes it's paid J, sometimes its a "freebie" (one of the four each year for platinum), sometimes its an award or points upgrade (to use up points from my account). And this seems to make a difference to Virign, which irks me.

At Qantas, no matter how I end up in J, I am ALWAYS a WP who happens to be flying in Business. (Which I like.)

At Virgin ranking seems to be based on how you got into J, regardless of your status. Which is a great way for them to lose the business from someone who flies frequently... After checking in for one flight recently, I was told once I noticed my seat move, oh, you are only on an upgrade, implying the person who took my preselected seat was paid J.

If I come to the conclusion that Virgin is prepared to give away my seat selection to someone who only flies a couple of times a year but pays for J, on a flight which I happen to be using up my loyalty rewards to attain seat allocation, then they will lose a whole lot of business (more than they are gaining from the irregular flier).

On the very odd occasion that Qantas have wanted to change my seat, they have rung me and asked if I was willing to change before hand.

I was using one of my Platinum upgrades. In the same call as I used the upgrade, I'd selected 2A (on an E190). Upon checking-in for the flight (1.5 hours before departure) at the ADL Lounge, my BP printed out with 2C. Theoni (the CSA) looked back in my booking to see that indeed I had been pre-allocated 2A. The other pax who was given 2A was in the Lounge so she swapped us and then paged him. I didn't need to be there to share the bad news with him. Don't know what was his Status, but she confirmed that VA want to look after their Plat members. That's what zi wanted to hear (and see the 2A BP back in my hand)

Happened to me a couple of weeks ago BNE-MEL when I used a comp UG in the lounge

It wasn't until after the UG had been processed that I was told catering was not assured. Sure enough no meals by the time they got to me in 2D. Unfortunately the Y menu offering is pretty poor now.

Left feedback on the Virgin web page and got what I thought was a satisfactory outcome.
