A fast-growing Vietnamese low-cost airline is seeking regulatory clearance to set up an Australian subsidiary in a move that could pave the way to establish a challenger to Qantas and Virgin Australia.

VietJet has asked the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for an air operator certificate and permission to start a locally incorporated operation with 10 Boeing 737 aircraft, according to people briefed on the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorised to comment. A CASA spokesman declined to comment; VietJet declined to comment.

If this ever comes to fruition, I'll place a bet that they'll have the worst service and net promoter scores of any airline that touch (or have previously touched) our shores.

Vietjet have a terrible reputation.

I've not used them, but heard many a similar comment.

It will be something if they are worse than Tiger.
 
Despite this they have grown to as big as they are now and even have two subsidiaries in other countries.
Highly praised for ULF (ultra low fares ). Safety record as good as any operating in Asia, but criticised for poor customer service, strict application of ancillary fees. Sounds like RyanAir, Spirit etc.
 
I have run it by the power by the hour airline management team here at AFF and they express confidence this little startup will be running next week given the propensity of CASA to hand out AOC’s to anyone who asks for it.

Apparently perfectly acceptable if on a budget, unconcerned with delays, heights <150cm and hand luggage only. 🤣
 
The Boeing reference is interesting as VietJet is currently all Airbus.
Although the group has lots of Max8 (30) and Max200s (100) on order.

Thai VietJet currently operates a 189 Y configuration.

RyanAir is currently the only one operating the 197Y seat abomination.

It’s a multi year process to get a AOC up and running.

They are run by a billionaire so at least this attempt might have plenty of cash about.m

Some pretty ordinary refund stories around, some taking 6-12 months.

Who has been allocated 2252 slots at SYD by the Slot manager ACL?
Looks like a domestic op and around 6.2 return flights per day (no Int flight would operate a 6/day return)
Then 425628/2252 = 189 which is mysteriously about the capacity for a 737-M8

Interesting QA only airline allocated less slots....did they "didn't use and then lost it"?

Wouldn't their market place placement be more in competition with JQ?

Any new low cost entrant will not so much be in competition with QF (the airline), but certainly will be in competition with Qantas Airways Limited (the corporation).
 
I flew Vietjet Y from Sgn to Hue 2-3 years back....airfare was cheap, wàs served a meal on this 2 hour flight, flight was on time and checked baggage arrived with the plane :)

Anything to keep Qantas honest with fare pricing will be welcome imho :)

[OT] Interesting JQ has less slots but more seats than VA [OT]
 
I've only flown them twice because they have a monopoly on BKK-PQC. Both flights departed and arrived early. And their song is catchy. I didn't mind hearing it on repeat while waiting to deplane.
