A fast-growing Vietnamese low-cost airline is seeking regulatory clearance to set up an Australian subsidiary in a move that could pave the way to establish a challenger to Qantas and Virgin Australia.

VietJet has asked the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for an air operator certificate and permission to start a locally incorporated operation with 10 Boeing 737 aircraft, according to people briefed on the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorised to comment. Highly praised for ULF (ultra low fares ). Safety record as good as any operating in Asia, but criticised for poor customer service, strict application of ancillary fees. Sounds like RyanAir, Spirit etc.

I have run it by the power by the hour airline management team here at AFF and they express confidence this little startup will be running next week given the propensity of CASA to hand out AOC’s to anyone who asks for it.

Apparently perfectly acceptable if on a budget, unconcerned with delays, heights <150cm and hand luggage only.
