Hmm we forget that some of the aircraft we fly on are a tad old, bit like driving a 12 year old computer at home. 12 hour download sounds crazy, have to say the CX system I drove two years ago sounds like a better option, not that i am a fan of those boxes that reduce you leg room under the seat.

Initially I thought a 12 hour download sounded crazy as well... But when you think of it, there is probably hundreds of gigabytes of data, there are about 20-30 movies, plus approx 10-20 TV channels, plus more than likely the data has to be copied to each of the dreaded boxes under the seats, as this is what gives the AVOD its control.

I am sure though with a little bit of thought, QF could easily find 12 hours to download it... LHR and LAX both come to mind, and a 744 would be in either of them almost weekly!

It is an interesting arguement though, to take a plane out of service to ensure it works as promised in the air, or to leave it in service and have it not work as desired, and annoy customers in the process... If the AVOD didn't work on several flights (this last flight was the first that didn't) I would look at different airlines, as when it wasn't working, often the screen wasn't working at all!

To many it may seem like a minor thing, but a 22 hours journey in this day of age with no sceen is just a tad annoying!

Actually, that's a ½ day to upgrade the software that processes the content as requested by the PAX.

The actual moves would be (I conject) on some sort of of physically removable media (Hard Disc, Multiple DVD's, Static Memory cartridge etc.), probably taking 5 minutes to set up each month.

I had a 333 with the latest verion of AVOD on Wednesday night. It was noticably faster, but the biggest change was the SkyShow/MAP with bottom scrolling textual flight information/data and significant variance to the way graphic information is displayed such as visual zooming in and out of world images.

If I was designing the technical solution for this, I would have used hot-pluggable or at least removable hard drives. That way the entire system, including OS, applications and data could be loaded up in a staging system somewhere, and a technician just walks onto the aircraft during a normal turnaround and plugs the exhange set of drive into the slots.

The whole system could be upgraded in minutes.

But if new code needs to be downloaded into those under-seat boxes, or into the in-seat systems, then its not quite so simple.

That makes a lot more sense! As all of the equipment would have to be updated at the start of each month!

It is just really annoying whhen they still have the previous months stuff (radio programs) in midway through the next month! :evil:

You're not kidding. I remember a couple of years ago I was doing MEL-PER-MEL weekly for about 6 weeks. The 2 movies showing were Bandits and Serendipity. You can't believe how sick you can get of a chick flick like Serendipity after a few viewings, so when the month changed I was all keen to see the new movies. How miffed do you think I was when, for 2 further weeks, they made the announcement that the movie had not been changed, and I had to watch Serendipity again :evil: People should be sacked for things like that :wink:
