Victoria Police criticise paypass/paywave

Yes, having these plastic cards in peoples wallets lying around for crims to steal and then reclaim for up to $35/100 of goods is really encouraging crime.

The $50 notes sitting in the same wallet/purse are so much better.

Except when that $50 is gone, there is no more...whereas Mr TapnGo Thief visits five stores spending $50 at each........

The banks have adopted the view that the higher incidence of fraud (and associated costs for the bank) will be offset by the increased merchant fees they collect.

Not hard to see how that will be true.

1. There should be an ability for customers to choose to opt out. I'm actually quite surprised this option isn't a requirement in Australia given how it is such a nanny state country.

2. Like the idea of the cut-out. May have to build a hole punch device and sell it on eBay for this purpose!

3. You have to laugh at the system. On the one hand they are promoting paypass, on the other they are introducing mandatory chip and pin for security....

Speaking on 774 ABC Melbourne, he said police were not consulted before tap-and-go credit cards were introduced and he regretted their introduction.

I didn't realise the banks needed to consult police before they introduced new services.

I love the tap-and-go concept, works so well for me.

To the naysayers, why can't government photo-ID be required to be shown/randomly asked to be shown (like if you look under a certain age when buying alcohol) to match photo and name to card... and then certain institutions can just put photos on their cards, eliminating the issue. A photo has to be worth more than a PIN or signature, surely?

I am pretty sure Citibank used to offer a credit card with your own photo printed on the card. I seem to remember a TV ad to that effect.... Its actually not a bad idea!

My parents had many credit cards with their photos on it in america.

But the bank will give you the fraudulent spend back. They aren't gonna give you back the $50 cash.

Bendigo Bank has ability to personalise your card for $10 so you can actually put any mug shot on your card - not sure if any other bank offer same.

Something else to note is that the credit card companies pass the cost onto the merchant - so there is not a huge incentive for the credit card companies to resolve the issue.
