Looking at that itinerary (and understanding that it's a private charter) how does Q manage to get into/out of Cuba in these situations given embargoes etc that apply to that country (assuming Oz is party to them) ???? I guess Cuban plane spotters won't have seen QF metal too many times...

The US has regulations about doing business with or in relation to Cuba. It means US airlines cannot generally operate to/from Cuba.

In the respect to this tour, the routing cannot land/use/employ US airports, and it doesn't.

Correct, they are very iffy about Cuba. Can't even bring cigars back in.....

*Cough* *Cough*

Funny the Yanks were buying up big on the Cuban Cigars in the Caribbean so I did too (Was on a cruise ship and didn't really realise the law regarding it till back on board) upon arrival back into Florida and being the Aliens that we supposedly are! had to go through a long process but still managed to pick up bag and walk straight into the parking lot!

Quite amusing that they spruke you can't do it yet people were buying boxes and boxes of them to take home. Though have seen it many times written on forums people reckon you could take a cow through customs half the time and they wouldn't even blink an eye lid.

What an utterly crazy price... I really aught to get into the business of organising these tours!!!

Yep, slightly off-topic but US Customs had no problem with us bringing Vegemite, coffee and gluten-free bickies into the country recently...

Despite the shadow seating etc I think I would opt to look outside the Captains Choice pricing. There are quite a few of their trips (that involve cruising)that can be booked direct with massive savings
That's what we did on Silversea in the Arctic- saw the tour advertised then found we could book separately for about half the price and fly J (on AY who were very good) and have a "verandah" cabin which on the expedition ship is really a french balcony but it was great to be able to hang out and watch the ice cracking. Many on the CChoice tour were less than impressed with the tour guide as he seemed to do nothing. The young medic they had did more of the day to day stuff which should have been handled by the guide by the look of it.
In our case they used commercial flights not a charter. I wonder how many are actually on the tour.

Really - we got our Marmite confiscated by a very officious CBP Officer a few years back.

sounds like a great experience,

But a huge amount of money and you could do it on commercial and get SC's

I'd love to go on one of these tours and it's certainly on my bucket list - though, might leave it to my retirement years (sounds like a geriatric convention).

Yeah a great experience but remember you can only go as fast as the slowest in the group and from what we saw, some were pretty slow.:) Though that said, most did pretty well getting in and out of zodiacs and at least some did recognise their limitations and stayed on board if it was rough.

I saw an advert today for a similar tour with captains choice on a 747 in October. First thing I wondered was if u would get status credits! But then reminded myself that if I could afford the $27k, the status credits wouldn't matter!

LOL - many times to make the message long enough!

I remember that they advertised that there are only a small number in the tour so that there will be lots of vacant seats - but it is still Y size, even if you lift up the armrests.
Must be pretty hairy coming into Cusco as the airport in bang in the middle with housing all around. It was bad enough in a Airbus 319 and certain breathlessness as we left the plane added to the thrill (though luckily we did not suffer from AMS much at all).
I had a serious look at this a few years ago and initially was quite enthusiastic (for the F option of course!). They don't fly with a full plane to make it more comfortable and (from memory) no night flying. They also rotated seats so people didn't get the same seat for the whole tour, to make it fairer. What put me off in the end was the no of people - even with light loads you were still talking about hundreds of people. I don't like being herded round things... They did say they would break into "small" groups of 50 and rotate around attractions in a town, so that not everyone was at the same place at the same time. In the end I decided that some of the small group tours that Abercrombie and Kent organised sounded better for us for South America. South America is on the back burner for us at the moment as the next 2 trips are Tanzania/South Africa next year and Gallipoli 2015. then South America in 2016 or Silk Route by train (not that I plan years ahead. :). )

From the QF source (she left 6 hours late, what a trip!)

26th April 2013 - VH-OEB Departs on Captain’s Choice South American Tour.
Boeing 747-48E VH-OEB departed Sydney as QF6034 this evening for a Captain’s Choice tour of South America. The full itinerary is:

26th April - Sydney - Buenos Aires
28th April - Buenos Aires - Iguassu Falls - Rio de Janeiro
1st May - Rio de Janeiro - Havana
4th May - Havana - Panama City
6th May - Panama City - Guayaquil
9th May - Guayaquil - Lima
10th May - Lima - Cuzco
13th May - Cuzco - Easter Island
14th May - Easter Island - Sydney.
If you are ever planning a trip to Sth America, this itinerary really hits all the major highlights in Sth America. I've been to all these places bar Panama and Havana which I hope to visit next year. The only thing tho. the itinerary is somewhat rushed! Not sure if there is a side trip to the Galapagos Islands from Guayaquil but I suspect there probably is as you wouldn't normally spend 3 days in Guayaquil. You wil be suffering from a bit of sensory overload if you did all this on one itinerray tho., a bit like a grand European tour!!
