Booked a J reward seat for BNE-SYD at 7 pm last night, for a flight at 6 am this morning. 16700 points, no pay. First J flight on DJ and very happy with the experience!

you should have really done the pay, the dollars are a good substitute for points, at least you enjoyed the flexibility of last minute bookings you cannot get with QF.

Yeah, I know. It was a last minute booking because I'd messed up another paid booking - accidently booked for March 18 instead of Feb 18. (I only worked it out when I couldn't OLCI on Friday night!!). So compared with a $168 saver fare for an early Sat am flight, the 17000-odd points for J seemed like a bargain.

I booked a Syd-Per flight with points + pay in J. I assume I will get no SC for this flight. Is that correct?

Just did a comparison on a DPS-MEL flight in July (a flight I was going to take anyway, in Y orignally):

Cash: $1,429.00
Points: 55,600 points
Points + Pay: 8,890 points and $225.27

That makes the value of the points in the Points + Pay option $1,203.73, or 13.5c per point!(!!!!!) Not to mention that $225.27 is ~$250 cheaper than a cash Y fare on the same flight.

Heh, just realised I did this wrong and didn't reduce the points to the minimum possible - so it's actually even better value than I posted. Proper calculations:

Cash: $1,429.00
Points: 55,600 points
Points + Pay: 6,900 points and $234.37

That makes the value of the 6,900 points in the Points + Pay option $1,194.63, or 17.53 per point.

The redemptions can be very good, especially on the coast to coast run in the A330.

I have the following J class redemptions book for March

OOL PER OOL (via SYD A330)
MEL ADL
ADL SYD
SYD OOL
BNE DRW BNE

Total Cost $939.24 and 48 300 points Normal Cost $7331.00

What a great saving

Pretty phenomenal isn't it? I just booked two of the fares I was going on about above - 2 x DPS-MEL in J for a total of 13,980 points and $468.74 - saving of $2,389.26 for 13,980 points.

I'm pretty sure they are.

Can someone tell me what MEL-BNE return in J is on points+pay?

I've only got a little amount until I transfer across, something I wish they would implement is the ability to see how many points are required before transferring across.

yes - look for H class ...

MEL to/from BNE varies between 24700 Points and $0 and 6900 Points and $129 each way.

So the round trip would be between 49400 Points and $0 and 13800 Points and $258.

6900 points will get you a one way anywhere in australia, 2x for return!

i'm looking at a random date, SYD-PER, 9th March.
All the ASA come to 6990 + $188 - $218 options are coming in as savers (which are in blue).
Am l looking at it wrong, or do these book into J?

Should l be looking further out?

Are these cheap J fares (points+plus) still available?

Yes. I did a dummy booking just this morning.

ASA's are not great value with DJ. Try the standard rewards buckets (H as Serfty says) and reduce the points component with money. This is where the $ + 6900 points that people are quoting is coming from.

You're looking at the wrong fare type :)

The cheap Points + Pay redemption will be revealed by selecting an option in the "Business" column (e.g. the first one, reading "33,800 + $16 or 36,700"), then proceeding on to the payment part of the process (two screens later?). At that point you'll see a slider where you can adjust the points & pay component - slide it down to min points, and it should work out somewhere around 6,900 points and $129 (or something close to that).

I have SYD-MEL J (one way) for myself and the lady booked for July on full points.

Is there a way of cancelling and then re-booking with points+pay?

Or am I just being greedy? :p

The T&C on J redemptions seems to infer that you can cancel without penalty unless the booking was made on a Virgin voucher from a previous cancellation. I'd have a good solid read-up before doing it though.
