Can someone in the know confirm the Velocity points can be used to redeem on ALL Hawaiian air flights or just those between AU and Hawaii (I know this can only be done over the phone).

The VA website seems to imply flights between AU and Hawaii whilst the HA website mentions Velocity points can be used to redeem on ALL HA flights - so conflicting info. I called VA to book a flight between NRT - HNL (HA and AA both show availability for HA822 flight), was advised by VA they don't have availability on this route.

Anyone had experience with using Velocity to book HA flights which are not between AU and Hawaii?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'd say with a confident guess that all HA flights can be booked with velocity points.
You should've asked the velocity rep on the phone if you are actually able to use velocity points on flights.

True seems odd there'd be an agreement with only certain routes being bookable.

Does anyone know when Hawaiian reward seats open up? I'm looking at J class next Sept and have had no luck yet.

I booked just few months ago J on Hawaiian (3 seats) & was about the 330 day out window (no earlier).
I constantly checked the AA.com website (as recommended here) for availability & called Velocity once I knew & saw what i wanted was available. Mind you I did book return trip separately as grabbed out bound as soon as they become available.
I had quick look from BNE to HNL & found just a few days. Keep looking mate, you'll find them.
keep us posted how you go.

I have redeemed VA points on HA in the past. It was 330 days ahead when I redeemed it.

The general rule is 330 days, but this seems inconsistent with Hawaiian. Sometimes they’ll release no new seats on a route for a month, then release a whole bunch in a block. If you don’t see what you want yet, keep looking over the coming weeks.

Obviously things are a bit harder if you want to travel during school holidays.

Bit of a bizarre and unique arrangement (see snip below) only AU/Hawaii is apparently allowed, that hasn't changed over time. Wonder how strictly that's enforced:)

Shame, in this day and age, too, you still have to call (like a redemption on VS). It's not bookable on-line. VA's web site is really clunky and showing a distinct lack of investment.... An upgrade is badly needed. They are way behind IMHO.

It adds to the confusion, but I redeemed AKL-HNL-KOA in J on HA. Definitely wasn't from AU as had to take QF for a positioning flight to AKL for it.

We have just redeemed for 2 x Y flights HNL - AKL for October 2020 (70k points and $93 in total). J not available.
Nothing available with HA to BNE/SYD (would have been preferred). We will probably pay extra for the extra legroom "economy comfort" seats.
I'm guessing school holidays will be the culprit.

A well priced AKL-MEL-BNE flight in VA J the next day (actually cheaper than the Freedom fare in Y) will go some way to make up for 9hrs in Y. And with family pooling will keep my Silver status alive another year.

We found when we wanted to book HNL to SYD in J on HA, Velocity had no availability (even when calling), while AA did.

We didn't have any AA miles, but there was a promotion with AA to buy miles with significant bonuses.

We decided to use our VFF points for Delta segments (LAX to SJO in "F", return for 99K and LAX to HNL for 49.5K I think), and bought miles from AA for HNL to SYD.

It ended up costing us ~$1200pp (+$27.10 in fees) each for enough miles, but considering the fare on HA was $3200 - $3800pp, and on QF it ranges $3500 - $5000pp, we came out ahead.

Anyone have a view on how good HA J class is? Looks refreshingly quite different colour palate & design wise. Whilst Il’s lie flat seat looks a tad bit narrow and it’s old school 2 by 2 seating. Food/lounge and amenities probably a bit so so!? Still, for a US carrier I imagine it’s a pretty good offering? Not as good as the new DL lie flat suites though....
