Seems like VA562 on 8 May was delayed out of Perth, and had the fun task of racing the clock against the Sydney curfew.

It got close, but why did it still line up for an approach at Sydney, before then diverting to Brisbane?

It's not like they were seconds away, or missed their first go. It attempted to land at 11.23pm.

I'm sure there's a good explanation that I've missed though :)

I just listened to the ATC recording of the approach and go around, and there aren't really any clues as to why they started the approach after 11pm in the first place, nor why they went around at the last moment.

In the ATC recording, the plane is cleared to approach runway 34L and cleared to land. At some point the pilot calls ATC and says "Velocity 562 going around", and is told to contact departures. The pilot then requests a further climb and direct track to a waypoint to the north, and the plane goes straight to BNE.

Probably proceeded with approach pending dispensation being given and then got word from company ops it would not be forth coming.

they reslly need to get rid of the curfew. This is just insane, the wasted fuel and associated coats of an aircraft in the wrong city, crew out of position, accomodation costs etc etc. these things are so quiet when, when you compare to the old 707/727/dc9 and early 747s. Plus coming in over the bay, very few homes under them. Its just insane. Western sydney airport cannot open soon enough. Looking at Flightradar, it got pretty close but never slowed to landing speed anyway, but depends on how accurate FR is, as it shows zero feet 180 knots. So not very accurate by the looks.

Ironically, this plane produced a lot more noise by going around, and subsequently flying over a bunch of Sydney suburbs.

No it didn’t produce much noise by comparison over residential areas

This was a diversion waiting to happen and really poor work from the VA Ops team who would have known the outcome hours prior to arrival.

It was blowing SSE 10+ gusting 15+ all evening and even with the curfew operating restrictions in place requiring a 34L arrival the crew still proceeded to approach above max tailwind.

Why they wouldn’t have just diverted earlier and saved the time, fuel, effort to get dispensation, but above all of those saved the pax heartache and false hope is beyond me.

I Thought the same until a couple of days ago. No it is not quiet at all if we're coming in from the north. A359 which is as good as it gets is still more than twice as loud as a car going by. 330 was really obvious

The Sydney curfew is a disgrace. It shouldn't be there at all.
It *should* be there for the runway closest to the suburb of Botany. Got a friend living there and it’s noisy.

But you don’t hear anything on the main runway from their place.

I dunno why but I’ve seen flights brought in on that Botany runway early and late when the main runway is clear and nothing lined up for arrival or departure. That’s not doing any favours for those wanting to scrap the curfew.
