Good morning,

I apologise if this question has been asked previously.

I am wanting to purchase 2 adults and 2 children fares to the US for May.i have been monitoring airfares for a few months now.

Qantas is priced at $5200 return whilst VA is on sale now for $4100.

Hubby is a silver QFF, but said he isn't bothered much if we fly VA.

My question is Qantas worth the extra $1100 based on safety reputation (yes I am a bit of a fearful flyer!) or is it a no brainer to fly VA?

Any advice much appreciated :)

It's up to you, really. I'm assuming that the difference of $1100 is for 4 people, so that's $275 each? Personally I would pay a little bit more and go with QF, not just because of their safety record but because IMHO their service is much better (others may or may not disagree). Your husband will also earn FF points etc. and may be able to get lounge access (if he still has the one-time QC entry pass given to silver FFs - you'd have to ask him)

While the 777 is a great aircraft with a great safety reputation when over the pacific on long haul I do think the more the engines the better. So for me it would be QF this time. However the flip side is I prefer Boeing planes to airbus so would time my flight to suit a 747.Matt

Personally I believe between both airlines safety is a non starter, both are equally safe!

$1,100 is actually a considerably big difference in this instance. With family pooling you could actually get status for your husband in one trip if you went with VA!

Out of the aircraft that these airlines use on the route, they all have very good safety records.

Thanks guys for the very helpful replies!

decisions decisions! I now don't know which way too go!

Someone please make a decision for me - my original thought was to go with the majority rules!

Decisions?

Not United! Lol

Seriously though $1100 is a big wack of cash. More then I could justify in that situation (family of four). You can take the family to Disneyland for five days straight with that amount of money or use it toward other interesting and exciting US cities to visit (Las Vegas, San Fransisco, Salt Lake City).

You could even use the money to upgrade any internal US flights to first class (because flying coach on North American Legecy Airlines is very very painful!)

In fact I do agree with a previous poster's suggestion to sign up all four of you to Velocity and then family pool the points and credit to your husband to give him some status!)

Or use the spare money to fly your husband to San Juan on American Airlines so he can credit back and really earn some serious status with Qantas ;-) hehehe

If you want to build status with an airline - fly with them.

If status is not an objective - go with the cheapest.

Hubby has about 50k points left. He does have about 13 field days booked to travel next year within Australia but due to country locations travel is a mix of qantas, Rex, brindabella, VA....so not always flying the one airline.

As others have said, safety is not an issue between these two airlines. Having sampled economy on both the VA 777 and QF 747 I would go for VA as to me they are more comfortable seats. I cannot speak of the A380 nas yet to try. $1100 will buy a lot of land based activities, for example the southern california city pass for 5 of you would not cost much more than that and there is your entertainment for 1 week paid for. The other thing to consider is the timing of your flights, does either airline schedule suit your plans better, any required connections, etc.

Virgin is a no brainer on this one

Talk of 2 vs 4 engines and airline safety makes me laugh though.

Save the $1100 and go with Virgin

VA, pool points/scs to one account. Spend saved money on better activities!

Save the money, go VA (just make sure you're definitely flying on VA metal). make sure everyone is a VFF member and pool your points and status credits. Then use the money to go eat out at some place nice when you get to the USA.

Go with VA, and pool points and SCs to hubby's Velocity account.
