VA have a problem. Could this partly solve it ?

Re award seats, they don't want pax using ff pts when they will pay cash. With ff seats they effectively already have your money.

If the planes are otherwise half empty, the potential customers aren’t paying cash. They are either going with another carrier or not flying at all.

All of those billions of un-redeemed points out there in the wild are a liability.

Releasing some award seats on an otherwise half full flight is a very low cost method of reducing outstanding points balances. And in a way that is linked to high customer satisfaction - it keeps your customers in the tent.

It’s a no brainer. Maybe their data analytics capabilities are not up to scratch.

know it's probably not easy to rearrange aircraft at short notice, but does anyone know, if VA has any spare capacity with A330s at present ? ie. Are any sitting around for long periods at some airport ?

How many A330s currently in VA fleet ?

Couldn't VA get an aircraft from likes of Etihad or is it too hard/wrong time of year(peak season) ?

Agreed it’s crazy talk but being pushed mostly by some people who seem to be slightly obsessed with Fiji, don’t think it’s a serious proposition :)

They could route via Apia or Nuku’alofa instead or even Funafuti :p:D

everyone I speak to at airlines, admits after a while, that forward bookings are not very good. Obviously the recession is having a huge impact on travel. Am getting 3 times the normal number of emails saying this in sale, that on sale.

Perhaps VA needs to cut some SYD/LAX/SYD seeing they have daily codeshare with DL? Could DL increase their SYD/LAX/SYD & those be codeshared as well with VA ?

the 1/2 full aircraft could be pax paying top dollar, who have ff points. The last thing VA wants is pax who were paying with $$$ to use ff pts.

HKG route launched with MEL (5x weekly) and is now daily in addition to SYD
it seems HKG is done daily but not profitable, whereas surely if LAX done properly, ie. daily it could be profitable, when VA pick up more business types from Qantas, who have really annoyed many people lately ...

But if it is going to "cost Qantas", won't it also effect the HKG route as well, it wouldn't be exclusive to LAX flights? So wouldn't that be an opportunity for VA too?

Does HKG need to be so frequent ? or from MEL & SYD ?

Think for a second. It’s a business route. What do business people want? Frequency and flexibility. Daily is what everyone tries to offer, see even today’s AJ comments re new WF services BNE to ORD and SFO ‘Our priority is to get them to daily as soon as possible’.

Is there a recession in the US?? I would assume most of VA traffic would have been from Australia.

I think you should do some research on to what the definition of a recession actually is.

If you're going to throw the term out there, at least convey that you have the slightest idea what it is or you sound ridiculous.

AUstralia is heading into the biggest recession ever, but many under 45yo can't see it or don't even know what a recession is. eg. building game is stuffed, retail is stuffed, restaurants are stuffed & only ones surviving are hamburger joints. Many 1000's are losing their jobs everyday. Underemployment is growing.

Ok, so please provide your definition of a recession and subsequent evidence that we are experiencing one because seems to be vastly different to my admittedly unqualified understanding.
