Definitely a new one, as per T&C’s ...
*To be eligible for this Virgin Australia double Status Credits offer, you must (1) activate this offer between 12.01am AEST 20 May 2019 and 11.59pm 27 May 2019 inclusive (Promotion Period); (2) after offer activation, book an Eligible Virgin Australia flight during the Promotion Period and enter a valid Velocity membership number at the time of booking; and (3) complete travel on an Eligible Flight.

Guess I’ll be booking some flights on Monday instead of tomorrow.

Weird as the link says the offer is expired but the T and Cs say you cant activate it until May 20

Looks like it might be the similar one from last year, targeted to agents but anyone eligible if registered.

Just seen click frenzy starts again from Tuesday evening, may be a promo with that mob...

Do VA gift vouchers work in the same way as QF by creating a shell with PNR? Or is it just simple monetary value without any smarts behind it?

Wondering the same thing actually - I believe they are just monetary value on travel bank and that a new PNR will be generated.

The last offer was Virgin metal flights only correct - not partner flights?

With VA’s issues at the moment I think I’ll pass on booking anything other than essential travel with them...

Normally the web page is created with the “ACTIVATE OFFER” on a timer. As the offer starts at 12.01AM AEST 20 May per the T&C’s that is probably when it will change to “ACTIVATE OFFER”.
It’s easier for have the webpage pre-loaded with timers setup, rather than having someone make the changes at midnight.
Also, to give FF’s extra time the plan their trips in advance and hopefully get a few more bookings.

This offer is not valid on long haul international flights to or from Los Angeles or Hong Kong.

Given what a disaster HKG has been for Virgin it appears, I am astounded they have removed them from the mix.

If I were Virgin I'd be offering Double SC ONLY to weak routes like that, that needs all the bookings they can get!

Are you aware of something which hasn’t been announced on the ASX?

As at 31st December 2018, they had over $1.2 billion in cash or cash equivalent AND reports their assets cover all their liabilities (plus extra): https://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20190213/pdf/442kt5555fq863.pdf
They have refinanced some notes, which is pretty standard to do: https://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20190226/pdf/442zrbgsz5mrff.pdf

I’m far from a finance expert however life experiences have taught me that the headline profit and loss announcements tend to be somewhat misleading.
If a company is cash positive (It’s outgoings is less than it’s incomings) is definitely what needs to be understood as a key factor along with many a belief “cash is king”.

Don’t get me wrong there are genuine issues affecting Virgin and other airlines, the cost of fuel is rising (the majority is probably hedged) and the AUD to USD (in which a lot of payments are made for airlines for fuel and aircraft leasing) exchange rate is dropping. A 1cent drop in the Exchange Rate could be $10,000’s AUD more. Also airfares are still cheap.

(As one, very simple example)If Virgin the accounting department and auditors agree that a B737 aircraft was worth $1million last year, but due to the declining aircraft 2nd hand market it’s now worth $0.5 million, but that’s not one but ten aircraft that’s a $50 million wiped off the profit BUT the reality is the aircraft aren’t actually sold. The company hasn’t lost $50 million its just adjusted the value of its assets. Next year the market conditions have improved as one aircraft is now $1milion .... Wow headline ASX announcement of profits.....

Rule of thumb, read the P&L as part of the accounts and then read the ASX release. (It’s possible that companies have a massive headline profit, but are asset rich and cash poor, the assets and products are worth nothing until sold.)

If a company says it has made a $100 million profit, if you look at the previous corresponding P&L’s the company’s assets (cash) may not have increased by $100 million and it’s possible the assets are worth less.

Maybe true but it is probably not the target audience. It also maybe part of scaling back the “giveaway” of higher status, keeping it to domestic keeps an incentive but not an easy giveaway of high SC’s.

VA gift vouchers are just normal gift vouchers and used as a form of payment at the end of the process.
In the case of another airline, their vouchers are actually the shell of a booking with a credit attached to it. Therefore they have a booking creation date.

If this offer does open up over the next couple of days then its a shame if they exclude their long haul flights. I'm about to book flights to JFK and onwards to Tel Aviv with Delta and it would have been nice to book with an Australian airline. The status credits earn with Delta is just too good to pass up!
