VA and SQ Alliance Final Approval

The regionals look fine to me...but I won't be paying 240k points to sample them!

At least VA provided SQ as an option for redemption. I would say that it would be good for VA to get another partner in Asia (say NH or OZ) but their hands could be tied with agreement with SQ anyway.

I will also try the New Regional C in early Jan for SIN-SYD, using 38.5K KF miles + high taxes. They were pretty good for day flights anyway.

SQ website has not yet updated on VA redemption. Let's see how they compare.

So why does DJ not join the star alliance then?

Richard Branson has a phobia about joining alliances, in any of his businesses.

Otherwise two fairly ordinary airlines are trying to get into bed with each other.

Doesn't make me very excited.

*A? We all want it don't we?!

But then how much is it gonna cost VA to pay *A membership fees/upgrade IT systems/standardising service offerings? Maybe they don't have enough cash flow at the moment to do this?

So I received the email from Virgin yesterday saying that from yesterday you can start earning on SQ. Trouble is there don't seem to be any SQ flights loaded in the the Virgin website??? e.g. BNE to London via SIN with SQ...

So you book your flights with SQ and add your Velocity number.*

*this should be simple but SQs website is monumentally dysfunctional these days so YMMV!

OK, so there is a wealth of information here so far, but most of it is too much for my poor addled brain to handle. :D I had a bit of a look at both VA and SA sites last night, but couldn't make head nor tail of it (which could well be more to do with me than with the sites).

So, I have a couple of questions that someone may be able to answer. Can I transfer points between Velocity & Krisflyer (I suspect the answer to this is no). Can I use Krisflyer points to buy a domestic VA fare (eg BNE-MEL)? If so, how do I book that?

As a member of both programs, I would like to know how it's going to work and what's in it for me (in really simple terms that I can understand
 )? LOL!

Velocity tells me I cant put my Krisflyer number into a VA booking. Is this corect? I could not see where to post my KF number doing a VA booking.

So what's the verdict?

Is it better to join Krisflyer and take of advantage of the *A or stick with Velocity?

From what I can see the earn rates are very similar... and getting to 50,000 miles for gold with Krisflyer doesn't seem too much to ask.

Krisflyer allows upgrades on any *A carrier and could also utilise Air NZ from Australia as well.

Am I missing something?

I am trying to work out the same thing.

I'm thinking Velocity may be the better option if you have a family that flies occasionally and can take advantage of the family pooling feature of Velocity.

For Perthites its good. Round trip Perth to Singapore in J for 120K Points. Pity it was not 22 Miles shorter distance, would make it 80K points return.

Maybe you could ask them to drop you off a few miles earlier? ;)

Thats what I was thinking......

Sir, can I get out here please.... Thanks

I am actually inclined to use Velocity because it appears as if Velocity status can be earned while flying SQ but KrisFlyer status cannot be earned while flying DJ. Can someone please correct me if I am wrong?

On the other hand, in terms of points earn and burn it may be more beneficial to continue using both. The reason being that Velocity points burn for SQ flights is really expensive in comparison with KrisFlyer Points. Likewise, KrisFlyer earn rate for DJ flights (particularly saver fares) is very low compared with Velocity and KrisFlyer redemption of DJ flights is expensive compared to redemption of SQ flights. Again happy to be corrected if I have overlooked anything.

Does anybody know when the code share flights will be loaded into the booking system?

Still showing nothing at the moment... Need to book a flight to Singapore from Sydney and would like to take advantage of the code share for extra Velocity points (and not go via Brisbane)...

I believe code share flights are only going to be introduced from next year.
