VA 777 - best seats

Nope, us lowly golds have access too.
As of when? I made some allocations around 6 weeks ago and was told "Sorry, VIP's only can pre-allocate". I then mentioned I was Platinum and she went away and came back saying "You're right, but only Platinums can I checked with my supervisor".

So perhaps it's VA copying QF... consistently inconsistent?

And besides, row 5 won't be 'the place to be' much longer. It was always the place to spot celebs too as they were typically placed there (I was told on more than one occassion that if a VIP was travelling I would be moved, which I found to be very unprofessional of the agents).

I made a points booking earlier this year for 2 J seats LAX-BNE and was able to select 5 A/C. Flight completed last month with no change. The flight was quite full in J

Very comfortable.

Row 5 is reserved for pre-allocation by Platinums only. The only way you'll have a chance is at the airport to change.
My daughter, her husband and 2 kids recently flew BNE-LAX in Row 5.
She was Gold when booked and Silver at time of travel.

Months ago, I traveled in October. I had to have my VFF number removed and re-added to the booking, then it worked.

I just did a dummy booking with no Velocity number for a flight in the new year that I'm on and the selectable seats included those available in row 5.

Interesting. Must have been enhanced away to anyone now.

It has been that way since at least August when I started doing dummy bookings for my flight in October. I meant to bring it up on here but never got around to it.

Wonder if it would stick?

Those seats are definitely premium. I wonder if doing a dummy booking without status would also give you row 10 in PE (yes Serfty, I know you don't rate it) or bulkhead in whY?

I think the opposite of row 5. It can be a little too closed in and you can't open the overhead locker easily if the curtains are closed, so for the night you are without your stuff. And opening and closing the curtains can disturb you if you are in the isle seat.

Stay away from row 5 if you wish ...

I find the inability to easily open the OHSB's a security feature - for stuff I need in-flight I keep a small [-]day[/-]night pack with me - it fits nicely at the head of the seat, between that and the bulkhead behind.

A couple of months ago I was able to fly J for the first time and the BFF and I selected 5A/B because of all your posts here. We were on-board and settled and already sipping our mimosas when the FA came and asked us to move. She said row 5 is reserved for parents with babies because bassinet blah-blah, and the ground staff should have allocated our seats to the family (waiting nearby to take them). The middle and far sections also had babies and she suggested that we may be more comfortable away from them anyway.

I REALLY wanted to say no but then imagined copping dirties from the parents, having to sit close to the other babies, and receiving poor or no service from the FAs the entire flight (plus the FA was determined, plus i was trying to do what civilised people who normally fly J [not me!] would do, plus i had no balls because it was my first time), so we agreed to move

The parents then went on to utilise the bar area as their personal extra space and/or playpen for their baby - their stuff was everywhere early on in the flight, and then all over the floor some hours later. I went and sat there a couple of times to read (couldn't sleep) and was just eyeballed for sitting in their space, or was side-swiped by them pacing with the baby

i'm still miffed I agreed to accommodate them once I saw what entitled, rude asswipes they turned out to be - that is never happening again!

What would you more experienced J flyers have done? Have you ever been asked to move?

Which row did you end up sitting in? So you are saying that there were 3 families with babies in J who took all row 5?

Can someone else advise if there are bassinet provisions in row 1?

i think we ended up in row 2 (?), and yes, 3 families with 3 babies taking up all of row 5

I can understand trying to group the babies together, but if there are bassinet provisions in row 1, I would decline to give up my row 5 seat. As far as being made to feel bad for enjoying something I paid for (ie. the bar area), well I certainly would not have felt bad about sitting there and enjoying my time reading a book, or having a drink.

I would have resited moving, firmly but peacefully.

I would also be complaining, again peacefully, nicely but firmly in relation to use of the bar area as a changing room, first in flight to the CSM (or whoever the head FA is) and if no satisfaction, to VA after the flight.

I would've camped out in the bar area with my BFF drinking lots of coughtails and cough-slapping the parents if they even complained about me being there because I'll remind them that I gave up MY seat to accommodate THEM! That should shut them up.

this thread was a really good read. I am preparing for a booking late this year to LAX in J and trying to read up on the best seats. we are three so middle seats seem the most appropriate. Though when we flew to LAX in 2013 of QF J we didn't choose the 3 seats on the lower 747 deck we opted for the upper cabin on the 747 which was 2x2 which ended up being great.

I didn't know about row 5, and it certainly sounds like a choice place until i read the bit about the "reserved for families with babies". Would like being in the middle 3 with families with babies either side. I'd also be concerned about he proximity of the bar and I might feel a bit enclosed with the curtains pulled, so guess there I'm one less to choose row 5 also!

From the picture of the cabin on the AustBT link the row of 2 x 3 x 2 seats look quite staggered .Is that a optical illusion from the photo or the case?

They are slightly staggered, so the two by the window are not directly in line with the three in the centre.
