My wife and I need to go to a convention in Vegas at the end of June, and we would normally fly QF economy.
However, looking at fare costs for when we want to go, the QF Y fares are about $1700 each way (syd-lax), and the VAust fare in PE is $1300 each way (roughly)
Am I missing something here, or is this a no brainer
We have to fly out of syd on sun June 26, and come back about a week later - the return is somewhat flexible.

Go with VA in PE. Also make sure you are a member of Velocity when you fly and you will end up with a around 18700 velocity points and status credits. A couple of domestic sectors with DJ to make up the 1300 status you need to hit Silver and Bob's your Mother's Brother. Free DJ luggage for 12 months and priority check in.

Also The VA PE Cabin is spot on, as is the service. Only thing I would do is ring and lock in a pair of seats for Window/Aisle rather than 2 of the 4 in the middle of the cabin, then when you check in ask for Row 10. The bulkhead is the best row but they block it in case of bassinet usage. In Row 10 you also get a handy little foot cushion instead of the footrest.

All in all the VA PE service is far and away a better option...

Cheers,

Boof

Must be a busy period for Qantas, as a month before you go you can get economy seats for $1600 return.
I think its a no brainer, fly VA.
Its a great price, plus Premium Economy has to be better than Economy, any day.
And make sure you get Velocity points.:p

If LAX-LAS is on DL metal, currently you will NOT get status credits. See the discussion at here:
http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/virgin-blue-velocity/dj-status-credits-delta-coded-27329.html

Also, be aware that the fare class used for the DL flights is inconsistent - sometimes it's booked in H (earning 1 Velocity point / mile), other times they are booked in U (0.5 points per mile). Best to call VA and ask about the fare class for each segment.

That generally the case for June flight bookings ex Oz.

Three years ago we wanted to go to NYC in June; cheapest upgradeable fro was ~$2200 (~$3100 for upgradeable).

We booked LONE 4's for ~$3700 (ex OZ) and flew in Business class from SYD-JFK with a points upgrade (192,000 all up).

Just to clear things up here... I was only talking about the SYD-LAX-SYD legs flying on VA. Premium Economy earns at 1.25 per mile on VA and SYD-LAX-SYD is 14,994 miles. So around the 18,700 can be earned just on the trans-pac legs which is a good earner really.

Cheers,

Boof

Are QF serious? I know it is all about supply and demand but that is a joke!

Having flown with QF whY last month to LAX (via HNL so had no choice) I would fly with Virgin in a heartbeat. Old 767 to HNL with bad seats and no VOD, old 744 back to SYD with broken toilets and VOD...pretty miserable stuff it was.

Unless you are on a 380 I find less reason to fly whY with QF unless on points.

The problem is, VA dont always fly direct (for those of us in Melbourne), whereas QF does. In my case, Im hoping to fly VA to LAX then QF home, but I'm really hoping those prices come down cos they are just crazy, especially given some of the specials that have been around previously.
