I did a one-off flight to the USA a couple of years back and earned about 30 000 air miles. Unlikely to fly with them again for work so I won't earn any more. I've played around on their website trying to book an award flight (a while back) with no success - seemed like there was some bug in it. Where can I go with 30 000 points apart from East Bumcrack, Idaho to Inbred, Wyoming? (ie can I go to NZ?) Is it a matter of ringing UA?

When FlyerTalk gets back up (supposed to be Monday, but should be soon) the UA forum might be the best place to ask.

with 30000 you should have no trouble getting to NZ as long as you take only 1 connection.
And it kinda needs to be on star alliance planes only

I don't know particularly where you are,
i'll have a look later for you i'm allready late :) lol

btw flyer talk is up

My understanding is that 30k will get you to NZ too.

I know I have said this in other topics but I have a United membership and have earned and burned points without ever having flown with UA.

I have had to visit Nairobi twice over the past few years and on both occasions the best way to get there was with Emirates. You can earn UA points with Emirates even though they are not a SA member.

Having earned over 60k on these flights I was later able to get a SYD-BKK return ticket on Thai Airways for 50k points.

Therefore the options appear to be to use the current points or perhaps accrue some more on EK or the SA family so you can fly further. I've heard coughnd is a much nicer place than the one you mentioned.

if you can get to sydney you can fly to auckland for 30k points in business class

Thanks for the tips, one and all. So I can grab a ticket to NZ at some stage - now all I need is the points (or the $$) for the better half to come too!
When I did the UA trip originally I didn't hold much hope of ever using the points as it seemed they were about to go belly up. Some recovery since then but for how long?

Did anyone here see that South Park episode where Mr Garrison invented a vehicle called the 'IT' which was to revolutionise transport (and put the airlines out of business. There was a great diatribe against the protected airline industry in the US. Will see if I can find the text.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
