I am planning on a trip to Toronto Ex-Melbourne in early Sept 2013 and wish to visit Mumbai for a few days on the return leg. I was wanting to use my points for upgrade to Business class at least for the long haul sectors. Whilst Qantas have flights to Toronto (via LAX/DFW) they do not have flights to Mumbai ex-Toronto. So I cannot use the Qantas site for doing my bookings. On the other hand Emirates fly to Toronto via Dubai and to Mumbai from Toronto also via Dubai. However Emirates are not part of the one world alliance and I cannot book Emirates sectors on Qantas site. My question is, what is the best most economical way for booking such multi-sector flights that will also enable me to use my QFF points for an upgrade (Gold status about a million points). Thanks so much for your help.

You can't use your Qantas points to upgrade on Emirates, or other partners as far as I'm aware. You could perhaps book an award in J or F with your points though... admittedly you wouldn't get anything back, but you certainly have the points available for such a task.

+1

Just further clarify for the benefits of the OP, your QFF points are good for award bookings in J/F (as well as Y) on both QF and EK.

But upgrade using QFF points is only possible on QF metals - not QF codeshared EK metals.

So, you could certainly travel on EK to BOM on your QFF point bank if you could track down an award seat.

Good luck.

Thanks guys for your valuable inputs. Since there are four of us travelling perhaps I should use points for the three and myself purchase a J class fare or pouts plus pay? Incidentally what is the best site to do such bookings using multiple carriers or do I just ring the QFF help desk? Thanks again.

You can only use QF points in the QF website, but getting one J/F award is hard enough, let alone 4!

That might be a lost cause.

Ahhhhh so when QF told me I am better off under this new arrangement flying ex. PER they lied?!

Given my 4 of the last 6 J flights I made to LHR were upgrade at the gate requests with QF points... Can't do that on an EK bird.
