With a first name of Fifa it should never be a problem :!: 
Ha :).
I wish it was as easy as Fifa!

Re: Using Phonetics to help the QF contact centre, is it being a real help or being a

I generally use phonetics, just makes it easier....I have a surname that people tend not to be able to spell easily. It is also second nature for me as I use it at work. Not only with Qantas but with most call centres nowadays.....

Re: Using Phonetics to help the QF contact centre, is it being a real help or being a

I used to feel al little self conscious if I used the phonetic alphabet, but soon got over that when it made communicating with call centre staff that much easier. Pity I won't be able to use 'uniform' as often soon.

It may be juvenile of me but every time I use it I end up with that song by the Bloodhound Gang going through my head - Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo. The video for the song is quite amusing.

Re: Using Phonetics to help the QF contact centre, is it being a real help or being a

I always blank out when I need to spell something ... for some reason my mind always goes to the most ridiculous things instead, it always seems to be "G for gorilla" and "B for banana". I think I know what I was in a past life ...

Re: Using Phonetics to help the QF contact centre, is it being a real help or being a

I use phonetics daily, I need it in my industry where I deal with people from all over the world. I suspect in many cases it helps the call centre staff.

Re: Using Phonetics to help the QF contact centre, is it being a real help or being a

I spoke with Qantas re a booking this morning and used phonetics to advise my PNR. No misunderstandings and matter rectified within seconds.

I always seek the easiest and most efficient way to do things.

Every so often I forget the corresponding word and find myself in a wheel of fortune situation.

Romeo, November ..... uhhh... D.... for Dog

That's when the phonetic alphabet becomes the frantic alphabet. :)

Re: Using Phonetics to help the QF contact centre, is it being a real help or being a

I always laugh at the way phonetics is spelt and how it is pronounced, given the nature of the word . I use it all the time, mainly because of a previous career. Interestingly 9 is the only number pronounced differently, and should be said as 'niner'

Re: Using Phonetics to help the QF contact centre, is it being a real help or being a

There is/was also the international telephone operators codes when operators used to speak to each other to request aphone number etc such as, A for Apple, B for BOb, C for Charlie, D for David, E for Edward, N for Nellie X for X ray etc.

I too use the accepted code for PNRs. One US operator told me to speak English when I said the time of 1930. :p

Re: Using Phonetics to help the QF contact centre, is it being a real help or being a

Always use it. Whilst QF already has my name in their system, many other places don't, and I can think of only one time ever in my life where I gave my surname without spelling it out and they spelt it correctly.
I don't normally bother on things where the exact spelling of my name does not matter (eg ordering pizza), but for anything travel related (but not QF) I won't even give them a chance to guess, I'll simply launch into Hotel Alpha Romeo etc...

If your native language is Tagalog that could be the case, true. I don't usually pronounce 3 as 'Tree' or 5 as 'Fife'.

Having said all of that, I use NATO for letters but I just pronounce all the numbers like I usually would - as this is usually better understood anyway.

I always use it and often get asked if I am/was in QF, or in the travel industry. I let them down gently ;)

Always handy for relocs

Actually 5 should be pronounced 'fife'. I don't know why.

Actually 5 should be pronounced 'fife'. I don't know why.

In radiotelephony, five and nine are easily confused... Hence 'niner' and 'fife'

Using Phonetics to help the QF contact centre, is it being a real help or bei...

There is a great Swedish ATC controller in the Middle East who uses correct phonetics 100% of the time. He is fascinating to listen to with his soft accent. 'Emirates fower fife niner, descend to sevairn tousand, Runway Tree Fife, QNH one zero one niner.'

He is so clear and concise and easy to understand (in a very high density approach zone). If only everyone spoke like that.

Aren't QF the only operators of A Tree Turty and A Tree Eighty aircraft in the world? ;)
