Due to a large KrisFlyer points balance (half a million KF) from multiple cancelled trips in 2020 and no real clue when I might be able to travel with SQ again I decided to book a VA redemption (domestic flight) using some KF points. It all appears confirmed in the SQ site and my flight is in a few weeks.

Has anyone had issues with these types of redemptions since the change of relationship between SQ and VA or am I likely to find it all quite straightforward like how it used to be back in the olden days?

Typically I wouldn't use KF points for VA domestic but see little else I can use them for in the near future.

Well I ended up calling VA because I could not get data from their website with the SQ booking reference and my surname. VA confirmed on the call a few days before flight that my booking was in their system correctly and I was able to check in with no issues.

So if you're sitting on a big KF points balance and want to redeem for VA it seems to still be fine to do this.

Figured I'd update this with my experience; the Bain changes today might mean this changes quickly so if I try again and have issues I will report my experience here.

I don't see any reason you would have issues with the ticket being accepted, but let us know how it goes.

If you have the KrisFlyer miles to spend, this is a handy redemption as you're not limited to which routes are available for redemption like Velocity members are. If Virgin is operating a flight, and there's availability in the relevant fare class, you can book it with KrisFlyer miles.

My theory or thought was that SQ losing their entire share of VA might have meant these relationships might have been temporarily suspended/disabled. Basically that is the only reason I saw a potential problem.

Good point on the routes as well, thank you! :)

Has anyone made a redemption on VA through Krisflyer as a saver award recently? Does it still work OK?

I have made a reservation today and been given a ticket number by SQ, but the VA website says the booking is ‘pending’ when I use the PNR given by the SQ website.

I made some recently and they always had issues; if you have the SQ reference you can call VA and they will find their booking number. It's not a quick process for them at all though...

The problem is the check in via app and at the terminals doesn't work, so you have to go to the counter to get a boarding pass.

I had a flight booked this way for my girlfriend who was so held up by VAs problem in finding the booking detail that she missed her flight; they put her on the next one but it wasted a lot of time.

So if you are going to book this way now I would suggest arriving to the airport a good 20 mins earlier than you normally would to ensure you have time at the counter for them to find your booking. It's definitely not as smooth a process as it used to be.

Any tips to book this these days?

Where to search for availability?
Have to book over phone only or online?

You can search and book online using the Singapore Airlines website. You search for the dates you need and then choose the option ‘other partner airlines’

Thank you oliver_adl, that’s a good warning and would have been stressful for your girlfriend! In the end I called SQ and asked them if there was a separate Virgin booking reference number which they were able to give me without issue (it was different to the VA reference). When I used that reference number on the VA website, the booking looks much more normal and I could choose seats and everything. So fingers crossed and a tip for others.
