02.02.09 - 0333AM ORLANDO USA

Hi Ya'll

This is a work in progress. I am sitting in my hotel in Orlando at the moment 3.30AM, unable to sleep and I thought, what the heck, might as well get my TR underway and try an "on the run" report if possible. I hope ya'll enjoy....

AVV / SYD / AVV JETFLEX (Y)

Here I am starting this trip report at somewhere over NSW on JQ623 on my way back from meetings all day in Sydney. My day started at some ungodly hour this morning boarding the 6am from AVV, and I only just made that flight. 40 plus in Melbourne the day before ensured sleep was difficult with the night spent tossing and turning with the aircon still trying to cool the house down so when my alarm woke me at 0415, I felt I hadn't slept at all.

After an excessively long shower I was dressing and noticed a missing button on my shirt. Mrs! had sent most of my shirts for dry cleaning yesterday which meant I had to iron a clean shirt. Great, my ironing is as good as my brick laying skills - nonexistent, this throws a major spanner in the works, I am toying with the idea of waking Mrs! for help but eventually succeeded in making it look halfway decent.

I race out the door and point the 08 XR8 in the direction of AVV with no time up my sleeve at all; a couple of red lights and the JQ plane won't even be there when I arrive!

Having a hair short of 400 horse power and a blatant disregard for the open highway speed limit had me walking up to the counter at 0533 to check in just in time. Through security, a red bull and we were boarding.
A nice quick smooth flight into Sydney where I met up with some fellow managers who had also flown in this morning from different states to meet a major customer… A day in meetings…

My days over now and sitting on the plane. I am working out what's left of my day; my bags are not packed, not even started, I have a tender to complete tonight, I have shopping to do, and I have to be at MEL for a lunchtime flight to LAX tomorrow. I also have to slip dinner with Mrs! at some fancy restaurant tonight as well as fixing my home internet connection which gave up yesterday...

MEL/LAX QF93 J 16K

The symphony of good news started at 0415 with my phone happily chirping to wake me – grrr enough already! I reached over to turn it off for an extra half hours sleep and realized I had cleverly predicted my unwillingness to get out of bed and had left my phone on the dresser. I had to get up…

Into the kitchen for a freshly steamed coffee from faithful Mr. Cappuccino and I hit the computer to finalise the tender. At about 8am, Mrs! reminded me I had a plane to catch, so quickly through the shower, a couple of unpacked items packed, into the car and off to MEL.

This is the starting point for a RTW ticket booked on the new Qantas OW engine with a few other flights thrown in for good measure (booked separate on the web).

Our OW itinerary takes us: MEL/LAX/MCO/CHICAGO/FRA/…CDG/GAT/MANCHESTER/LHR/FRA/HKG/SYD/MEL. I also have Ryan Air flights FRA HAHN /KLAGENFURT & LNZ/STANSTED and Easyjet STANSTED/LYON

Out of the car at the F Valet and said a long goodbye to Mrs! and in through the doors. I was just handing over my passport when my travelling companion arrived and we proceeded to check in. We snagged the exit rows on the top deck to my surprise (16J & 16K) – I thought they would have gone, handed over our bags and we were off to Flounge…

Through the security and immigration checks, straight through duty free and up the escalator to the Flounge to be welcomed back.

The Flounge was not that busy and had the usual selections available.
Eggs Benedict with salmon, orange juice, coffee and toast with vegemite for breakfast and the lovely waitress gave me a good handful of vegemite sachets to take with me (I usually have a tube – I love the stuff!) and a couple of glasses, ok, five glasses of champers over a couple of hours.

While there, I witnessed the new 380’s wing being duct taped up (!) and with interest found out that you can catch the MEL/SYD DOM flight on the 380 on Fridays…

A380.jpg

We boarded the 744 on time and wandered upstairs to the assigned seats – darn, starboard side so the seats are forward and the side storage is limited to a small access point and the view is limited to a cramped single window… oh well, still better than Y…

CSM announcement… “Ladies and gentleman, we will be dimming the lights for takeoff for your comfort and for the visual enhancement of our cabin crew….” I had to laugh…

After a delay of about 30 minutes, we pushed off and pointed towards LAX into hopefully clear and smooth sky. Prior to takeoff during the amenity kit handout, I asked the flight assistant for a lady’s F amenity kit so as the PJ’s were being handed out, the FA handed one over – Mrs! will be happy with that.

I reclined and caught a short sleep listening to something on iPoddy before the meal service started – the champers in the Flounge made for a great sleeping pill (!) and I followed up with a bourbon right before the meal. The meal consisted of a green salad and a selection of antipasto – a double thumbs down on all accounts – I guess if you are an antipasto fan, well it would have been OK, but if not a fan….

QFmeal.jpg

I followed the sun dried goodness with the beef medallion which was a lot better. The service, I’m sorry but it was utter cough.

The FA didn’t give bread rolls, he seemed in a daze, in fact, he would be the worst FA I have ever seen in a J environment. Don’t get me wrong, he was polite and tried to be attentive but it was the simple things he failed on and all in all, the meal service was very disappointing to say the least. Overall a sad J experience.

I passed on cheese and fruit, and watched a movie while enjoying a couple more bourbons. After the movie (I can’t remember the name, a CIA story with Crowe and D’Caprio) I reclined with a couple of pillows and a blanket and snoozed for quite a while.

My seat had no padding I am sure…

I awoke and watched a couple of episodes of Top Gear. During this time, I ordered a chicken, cheese and tomato toasty and an OJ. Both came in a timely manner – pity it had sun dried tomatoes, it was OK though…

Bumps for ages – seatbelt sign on for ages – apprentice pilot…

A chapter or two of my book, another snooze, a couple of episodes of Man vs. Wild and I was being asked if I wanted breakfast. Another mistake. What is it with QANTAS and sun dried tomatoes? It’s a conspiracy, it’ a disgrace, its tomatogate…

A nice smooth landing into LAX and the 15 hours in 16K was over. Off the plane and after a 15 minute wait, I was being finger printed and let go to grab my luggage. Outside and to the middle island, we waited for the Thrifty Rental car bus and were quickly whisked away to pick up a rental for two days – a Dodge Charger (very disappointing but that’s another story).

Car.jpg

OK, I have never driven on the right before. This was an experience. I would call it less driving, rather, continuous occurrences of near death experiences…. Luckily we only had to get to the Raddison LAX…

After checking in, we went to our respective rooms and cleaned ourselves up with the agreement to meet in the lounge for a coffee 1 hour later. Ahhh, a hot shower and I was feeling partly human again – I wont tell you what part of the human I was feeling though – and down to the lounge for a coffee during which time, my colleague and I decided to do a bit of LA sightseeing by car (more near death experiences).

We wandered down Hollywood Boulevard, had a genuine street vendor hotdog, drove around Bev Hills, went to Santa Monica and walked out on the pier, drove back to the hotel and realized how tired I was. After another shower and a quick lay down, we met downstairs and had a nice meal and bottle of nice chardy.

I had scallops on a bed of crab ravioli with caviar in a white wine sauce, mmmmm mmmmm!!! After coffee, bed for ZZZZZ’s

Woke up at 0700 and went down for breakfast – awesome selection. Our plan for today being our own time was to drive to south and cross into Mexico for the day. Our waiter at the hotel talked us out of doing that with some horror stories of issues in Mexico at the moment, so we got the car and headed south toward San Diego for the day.

LAXBreaky1.jpg

After a few more near death experiences and missing a freeway entrance, the GPS chose another route that took us past oil davits and through town and finally onto another freeway.

While admiring the mountains, we decided to go visit Hoover Dam instead of San Diego – the GPS was updated and let us know it would take 4 hours to Las Vegas – hohum, the drive would be good…

Vegas2.jpg

Vegas3.jpg

We shot along the freeway most times at about 85mph and the miles got chewed up rather fast. Even with a coffee stop and a change of driver, we still smashed the GPS time and we hit Vegas in fine form. Except for a car crash holding up the show, everything was a smooth as silk.

Vegas4.jpg

US Freeways, gotta love em!

Vegas5.jpg

We skirted around town and shot straight out towards Lake Mead and towards the Hoover dam. Just before we got there, there was a casino on the left and a sign out front advertising helicopter rides – who could pass an opportunity like that up?

We got in a smaller helicopter – looked like a H500 but seemed smaller and we flew out over the lake then a circuit across the Hoover dam and back to the casino. Helicopters + Adrenalin = Gotta have a beer… off to the casino for a quick beer and punt!

Chop1.jpg

Straitman – you are soooooo lucky!

A drive across the dam and into Arizona, a quick photo opportunity and back to Vegas for a walk along the strip and a visit into a couple of casinos – again a quick beer and a punt. I left the casinos better off than what I went in with – I was happy.

We had dinner at the Flamingo’s buffet – good selection including free drinks. By 2030 we were on the road again back to LA, again sitting on a steady 85 most of the way. In my opinion, we need to raise the open road speed limit in OZ to at least 135km/h. 3 ½ hours or so later, we grabbed a quick drink at the bar which was closing at the Raddison and headed for bed – exhausted to say the least.

LAX / MCO AA244 F 1A

We allowed extra time for dropping the car back to Thrifty but our timing was exactly brilliantly on the mark and we were in and out of Thrifty in minutes on a bus back to LAX. Check in was much the same with us walking into the [-]Admirals Club[/-] Flagship Lounge at 0700 on the nose for a 0830 boarding – plenty of time for apple juice, bagels with honey, a coffee and some fruit. While we were there, two other WP’s sat near us (by the food service) both of whom I said hello to.

AA1.jpg

AA2.jpg

We boarded on time and had a reasonably smooth flight to MCO with a nice breakfast of egg, bacon, potato, bagel and fruit with good coffee. A later snack of freshly baked choc chip biscuits and coffee was had and it wasn’t long until decent into MCO.

There was an AA Captain sitting behind us (in transit), we both commented to him on his fantastic landing, smooth flight and precise taxiing, we also commented on the lack of controls in instruments at his seat and did he land with a Wii?

He thought we were hilarious and was still chucking away to a FA as we alighted the aircraft from the centre door.

Into a cab and we were taken to our hotel for the next week, The Radisson Celebration where we checked in, showered and changed then headed over to another hotel close by where the conference organizers had a HUGE marquee set up with 4 HUGE screens hung from the roof with a HUGE sound system to watch the super bowl.

Bigscreens.jpg

I must say (and sorry to my American friends) that NFL is singularly the most boring sport on the planet with the exception of the national grass growing championship.

They had 3 minutes to play which took 23 minutes to complete. Not a single player had a sweat happening… AFL at grass root level is more active than a NFL grand final in my opinion.

The atmosphere, hooters girls running around, free flowing beer and awesome food made up for the SH*^ game on the TV’s and I did enjoy myself. After the game we departed back to our hotel where we partook in a nightcap then headed for our respective rooms for a good nights rest.

The rest of this week is in conference except when my companion and I disappear out to the cape to tour NASA.

To be continued…

Mr!

Moments of panic as a car barrels around the corner toward you - on the wrong side of the road  ...

... but that's OK as you are already driving on the wrong side of the road ...

... and you miss ...

One gets get used to it ... ;)

The misses are ok. Its those that are accurately described as a "near miss" that cause the problems ;)

very wise to brave the ironing yourself, or else this might have been a totally different trip report :D

Why did you not go to the Flagship Lounge?

Interesting stuff so far :)

Why did you not go to the Flagship Lounge? ...
They did!

Check the first 'photo in post #6 - it's taken from the F/L a little up from the reception desk, looking South. The end of the self serve bar and it's "Coffee" machine (under the TV) are on the right.

(I had the same question initially, but after a good close look I was able to discern the actual location).

OK - I thought that looked like the paid bar in the AC. I dont recall the doorway at the end though.

More details ...

Those tables and chairs to the right are along a low partition dividing the carpeted area from the tiled walkway along the self service bar.

The door near the TV leads to a small "Staff Only" Kitchen. Other door right done the end is an "alarmed" emergency exit.

Here's a link to an image from a bit further back taken before the furniture was replaced ~18 months ago. (Credit to FbgDavidson, 2006)http://img419.imageshack.us/img419/1024/dsc028360gy.jpg

Catching this would be of interest to me. I've done a domestic dummy booking but can't seem to find any flights with the A380. Can you give any more tips of how I might find the correct flight and book it?

Oops, Great TR

Sorry, I can't, I can only go on what the Flounge lady (I expect manager or high up) said to me which was "you can DOM the flight to SYD on the 380 on some days...."

Sorry...

Out to the cape.

After meeting up with a couple more Aussies at the conference, we decided that today was the day of the great escape out to the cape or more precise to the Kennedy Space Center (KSC).

At around lunchtime, we done a Houdini and escaped the clutches of the beast of boredom and partook in many more near death experiences - driving in the USA!

I hired a small Chev – silver… grrr, don’t know what model…
What does not help is the GPS supplied with the hire car seems to be out of calibration by about 40 meters, this is compounded by its reluctance to talk! Trust me when I say this is a problem. This is like taking a boat to Tassy and it misses… or driving to Sydney from Brisbane and you arrive in Perth or flying to the moon and seeing rings…

The Orlando freeways are great until you take a wrong turn, I burned 1/4 of a tank of fuel just trying to get to my hotel across the freeway which from where I took the wrong turn was only 200 meters away!

We headed towards the cape at a good rate of knots, through the toll booths with our excitement levels increasing when we saw the launch platform in the distance.

ksc3.jpg

There is a shuttle (orbiter) launch next week, what a shame I won't get to see it. We entered the space center and handed over $39 each for the only tour available for the day, we were too late for the launch pad tour we really wanted to do, so we settled for the viewing tower, Apollo 11 and the international space station tour.

ksc1.jpg

Heads up to anyone who’s visiting, half a day is nowhere near enough time for these tours!

ksc2.jpg

ksc4.jpg

ksc5.jpg

ksc6.jpg

We managed to get stops 1 and 2 of 3 done of our tour (run out of time), this was a high rise tower looking out to the launch pad (where the shuttle is at the moment) and the Apollo 11 exhibition…

WOW
W O W
W O W

OK, my point is made – this tour and facility is exceptional. I highly recommend anyone to go there – it shows mankind’s (admittedly Kennedy’s want to beat the reds) ability to go against the odds, to con a quote “FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION…”

We were tourists in every sense of the word. We bought souvenirs, made necklaces from 1c coins, took photos with our heads in fake bodies and done stuff you just wouldn’t expect four of Australia’s noted engineers to do… Childhood’s relived…! We had fun however, the fun ended when 5.30pm arrived and we had only seen ½ the park – we will return!
