Hi,
I'm heading to US in 2 weeks for about a month. Can someone recommend a sim card with talk & data that allows me to use my iPhone as a personal hot spot? From my understanding not all sims has this function. Thanks.

I used Red Pocket Mobile Unlimited (just back in March) which was prepaid and cost $98 for a month. I purchased it online here in Australia and I got it within 2 days of ordering it. Very easy to set up and use...unlimited calls in the US, a small portion of International calls and texts, instructions on how to set up, choice of normal or micro sim AND 2Gig of Data of which I barely used, as free Wifi everywhere in the States. PM me if you want the website. It worked the minute I turned the phone on in the US and had a number to give people before I left. Quality was excellent.

oh and forgot to add, no problem using my iPad or Laptop with the phone as the personal hotspot when I needed access to streaming videos

Sorry still new to this and don't know how to pm. It will be great if you can give me the website details. Thanks.

Is there anything similar for use in Western Europe?

Which country? When i was in France and Italy last year I brought a SIM for both countries...very cheap and the especially with the Italy one, unlimited data and very high speed. Top up's can be made via 7 Eleven type shops, online or with CC.
Otherwise there are Global Sim's out there, however the majority have poor data included with them

Was your iPhone jailbroken or not? (There seem to be some reports that you need to jailbreak to be able to enable tethering with Red Pocket.)

Except Travel internationally with 3G data SIM cards and avoid internet roaming charges which is pretty good value if you're going to use a lot of data.
Depending where you go, this is super expensive. The cheapest plan they have for a 'monthly' use (based on a calendar month) and 50mb per day (data only) is $300 for a month!

My advice: Find local SIM cards and use them. AT&T in the USA gives you $50/month for 1gb and unlimited calls/texts (local) and text to a lot of international destinations (AU is included in that). There's also plenty of good deals in Europe for roaming as well. Then the SIM is yours (this one you mention appears to be primarily a 'rental' SIM that you return and they knock off $50-100).

There's plenty of places online to buy 'local' SIM cards before you leave (there's a premium for it though). Of course, I have my stash for HKG, SIN, LHR/EUR, NZ and the USA. I just put cash on them as required (some do have expiry so you have to watch that).
