Hmmmm it seems like people have been charged AY YR since May/Jun. Still rather ambiguous

Clarification From American: Fuel Surcharges & Award Chart Changes - One Mile at a Time

Will give them a call tomorrow to clarify...
It's not ambiguous at all. Surcharges on BA and Iberia only as per the published rules and award chart. People have been charged them on AY as well, questioned it and got the money back. You may trawl the relevant Flyertalk thread for examples of this

Might need to look at changing the whole ticket after what happened to MH this morning... Wonder how much more they can take. Such a terrible thing to happen.

Why? This just seems like it was pot luck. 10 mins later it could have been an SQ plane. If it was another disappearance of technical then I could understand wanting to change airlines.

I agree but I think it's more a case of will MH still be around by the time you need to fly!

MH have been in a very bad financial shape for a while. This blow might be just the last straw. Purely financial reasons (possible bankruptcy), nothing technical

I agree, in my opinion this is definitely not their fault but human behaviour does not always rely on logic. If people are turned away from using MH for whatever reason it doesnt really matter if that reason has validity, they still aren't flying MH.

Apparently 40% down on stock price at 0900 today. Terribly bad luck, but some will ask why they were over that area at all.

Many others were over that area...I looked up some historical flight paths from 16/17th and SQ, LH, TG, BR all went exactly the same way...essentially almost everyone flying from LHR/AMS/FRA etc to KUL/SIN/BKK. BA was one exception where the SIN & BKK flights seemed to purposefully detour well south of Ukraine.

Exactly, could have been SQ or AI etc. I wish it had been none of these... however this is getting OT. :)

Follow up on the booking, I can see the flights from KUL-BKK(MH)-HEL(AY)-CDG(AY), but the SYD-KUL and CDG-KUL-SYD MH flights don't show up on QF/BA/QR sites. Is this normal?

No. At least BA should show them

MH does not use Amadeus, which is used by QF/BA/QR. The only MH segments that will show up are the ones immediately connecting to the segments on the Amadeus PNR.

Bad thing about MH segments is you can't seem to retrieve them on the MH manage my booking site, but you can book a meal.

Ahhh glad that's the case shows up in US site and I couldn't access on MH site either. Will try the meal if I don't change then.

I had some MH flights booked for next year but to be honest always felt like I could improve my itinerary anyway so tonight I cancelled my previous itinerary and rebooked for March/April next year:

SYD>PER>DOH>TXL (dest) >JFK (stop) >HKG>SYD

2 pax all in J, 120k each + $266.35 ea

Considering before we were going home via Europe (BA) and across to NYC on Iberia even with the cancellation fees I've ended up ahead money wise. Also they incorrectly charged me 130k per person last time but it was my first booking so I didn't think to argue. So I've gained back 20k pts as well! (they charged the Europe rate rather than US but again I really don't mind as coming out ahead).

Flying QF to Perth, Qatar on to Doha and Berlin, Air Berlin across to NYC then Cathay all the way home!

Just booked 1 x J SYD to JFK (via HKG, CX), JFK to LAX (Stopover, AA), LAX to HKG (CX), HKG to SYD (QF) for March/April next year. 110k miles to A$186 in taxes. All done and ticketed in 15 minutes. Very helpful agent. (although I did spent one day researching availability and routing before hand so I knew the flights, dates and times I wanted).
