I now have a total of 500 points remaining in my USDM account, and am unfortunately not eligible for the current offer for a top up. This will be my and my partner's first time in a proper first class, although I have been fortunate to snare an older QF F seat on a J redemption previously. I know Thai have two different types of F on the 747 and the one currently showing is not their best first class, however this is Thai so anything could happen.

Now fingers crossed for no big flight changes between now and May 2014 that break the itinerary just as US leaves Star Alliance

absolutely no need to be concerned between the TG10F and 9F configuration. The 10F is perfectly fine :)

the only suggestion I would make... did you consider leaving from SYD? (take a QF domestic to connect). F/F beats J/F hands down :)
 
I did think about it, but we are on tight enough timing for leave not to make it seem worthwhile, although I know people here might question my priorities in turning down a possible F sector.

USDM Booking Angel searched for 15+ mins but just could net get availability CA PEK-MEL.

SQ flts booked with SQ same dates would cost me 123,250KF pts + Taxes AUD804.42.

I was told, only a few days ago, that I cannot go to Europe via US, as it is explicitly not allowed in USDM!! I guess one cannot go to Europe via US, but can go to US via Europe?!

You can make changes prior to travel at a modest fee... $150. Changes to routing, dates, class I suppose.
 
I'm going to miss these guys so much.

Just had the most wonderful operator who helped me book SYD-GUM in first for 40,000 with 2 (!) stopovers in Oct 2014:

SYD-BKK (TG F)
BKK-KIX (TG F) (arrive KIX 7AM, fly out 9:30PM)
KIX-GUM (UA J) (dest 2 nights)
GUM-NRT (UA J) (stopover 4 nights)
HND-HKG (NH J) (stopover 1 night)
HKG-BKK (TG F)
BKK-SYD (TG F)

No dramas at all with the stopovers, the weird thing was she tried to find the flight I originally wanted from NRT-HKG but she didn't see availability, so she just checked HND and found a flight the next morning. She actually asked if the destination was Guam or not and was happy to price it at 40K. All done with $190ish in taxes in 23 minutes.

I've got two trips booked with them for 2014 now, since I figured I'd better make sure I get this one in before the merger and I already have a 110k business Australia to US via Asia trip planned for April. When I booked that I had to HUACA twice because the operators weren't sure about the MPM and they both seemed weird about me listing them the flights - no such dramas here, I couldn't have had a better time if I'd booked it myself.
 
My latest challenge for my BIL is something out of PER in J or F at the end of this month with a return just before Christmas. No F at such short notice but I can easily find J on BR's new lie flat Royal Laurel class going over. Coming back was a challenge... but so far I am seeing availability in J all the way with something like LON-FRA-PEK-ICN-BKK-PER ! If I can optimise a connection or two out I will, but that looks like my best option so far with a mixture of LH / CA / TG coming home.

What time do you arrive and depart from Tokyo? Only if the layover is more than 24 hours is it considered a stopover by the agents I believe...

Arrive 12:30PM, depart 8:45PM next day. My ideal plan was to ask for 3 nights in Tokyo and 2 in Hong Kong and work from there (changing from 3/2 to 4/1 if I couldn't do multiple stops), but the operator suggested the flight to Hong Kong in the morning when my original plan fell through. So yes, two 24+ hour stops. :)
 
Just found out on FT that a TPAC + TATL award is legal. USDM only classes round the world if there are 5 or more stops. So my MEL-xLAX-xPHX-DEN, DEN-xORD-CPH, CPH-xSIN-MEL is OK.
