Fellow AFF's, I am having some difficulty with QF (unusal I know), and I just need some other opinions to know if I am interpreting the rules correctly.

I am currnely on a DAS13 Circle ASia fare SYD-HKG-TPE-NRT-MEL-BNE-SYD. I am currently in TPE, on my way to NRT and MEL tonight, and now need to change my plans and get to Coffs Harbour rather urgently (family matters)

I have called QF with the proposed change of SYD-HKG-TPE-NRT-MEL-SYD-CFS-SYD and first they said I cannot transit SYD, but I pointed out the rule that states I can, now they are saying that they are not sure CFS is a permitted destination on this fare and if it is, I must terminate in CFS due to transiting my point of origin. There is nowhere on the published OW fare rules that mention these (that I can see).

Is there something I am missing? Your opinions/experience is appreciated

Qantas are incorrect. In this case the rules are specific. From the published oneworld Circle Asia & South West Pacific rule sheet on the oneworld web site:

  • Travel may originate at any point for which fares are published and must terminate at the same point, or an intermediate point in the country of origin.
The point of origin may be retransitted once, provided no stopover is taken.
So, that's not even open to interpretation.

more:
  • Travel must be on the services of BA/CX/QF/JC/JL/JO/EG/NU and their affiliates only.
  • Travel permitted on the following Airlines, which are affiliated with oneworld. All affiliate carrier flights must be booked using QF/JL/JO/EG designators.
    • Japan Airlines – JAL Express / J-Air / Japan Transocean Air
    • Qantas - QantasLink operated by National Jet Systems, Eastern Australia, Southern Australia, Sunstate Airlines, Jetconnect and Australian Airlines. ...
While SYD/CFS is operated by "Qantaslink - Eastern Australia A/lines", this is permitted as thay are an Qantas Affiliate.

After several calls from Taipei to QF in MEL(that really bugged me), I spoke to a supervisor and they finally could not point out the rule that said I had to terminate in CFS after transiting my point of origin. SO I guess I won that argument....

It is all sorted out now, and I suggested to the supervisor that more traingin was required on some of their fares, or experts in different areas need to ab available as I have booked four of these fares now, and each time it is like pulling teeth, becasue each CSM essentially don't know what they are talking about, and it was just dismissed, which is disappointing given that I remained curtious and polite through all my conversations with them, and just providing feedback.

Anyway, rant over now. All sorted out. Cheers.

Glad it got sorted for you Jasonja3

I remember you helped me out when I was looking at booking one of these fares. My LAS13 is now all booked MEL-SIN-KUL SGN-HKG-TPE-ICN-KIX-HND-NRT-MEL with fares booked separately for KUL-SGN and HKG-PEK-HKG.

I too found that QF reservations staff had no clue on this fare. In fact when I called to book the staff member told me she knew nothing about and had never booked one and I probably knew way more than she did. She called me back after checking the rules and quoted me less than I was expecting saying there was one less extra stop than I had calculated. I asked was she sure? And she assured me her supervisor had checked it and it was correct. I didnt want to argue as it was in my favour to not have to pay for the extra stopover.

I didn't end up paying for the flight for a couple of weeks after booking and when I went to pay before the deadline was told the quote was wrong and that I needed to pay for another stop. I didnt argue with that as I was pretty sure they were right, but goes to show they really do need more training on these fares.

After repeatedly requesting an emailed receipt and itinerary for the above (its going to be a paper ticket) I still have not received anything. I can see it in my FF profile though so I guess thats ok, but I still need the receipt for business expenses!

Cheers

As very polite and helpful as I've always found them, QF phone operators really do not know the ins and outs of their own rules. In planning a LONE4 earlier this year I received five different answers from different operators on lounge access. QF (and perhaps other airlines) do have a litany of complexities to their rules; one look at their QFF benefits page for the different status levels clearly shows this with the many different #, ^, # etc. of fine print.
