Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have never been on upper deck on A380 in economy.

I had 32B and 32G pre-allocated but didn't get to try either. Sitting in 5A both times. I will have to wait for another opportunity to try out upper deck economy. ;)

Them's the rough breaks JohnK :p:mrgreen:.

I asked if he flew frequently and he said regularly. Then he mentioned that he had to pay $25 for the seat allocation.

Anyone with some form of oneworld status (even ruby) wouldn't pay the seat selection fee...

I'm not sure if it's anything particularly new.

A while ago on QF9, I was in 32A. Got into conversation with my seat neighbour and, knowing that most of the upper deck was ordinarily blocked off I asked if he flew frequently and he said regularly. Then he mentioned that he had to pay $25 for the seat allocation.

Thought this was peculiar and perhaps just a TA add on cost but perhaps not.

No if you have bronze or no status on international flights you need to pay $25, domestic is free. Though have a higher status pax on the same booking then their status applies. Been this way for a while now.

It appears QF is now allowing anyone to pick seats from the upper deck in Y, albeit with a $25 fee for non-status pax:

32A/32B/32D/32G/32J/32K/33F/33G/33J/33K are actually taken and not just blocked.

What is the tier status of the above pax MR? Was it an award ticket using a WP's points?

I just checked the booking of a colleague who is PS and he can't select any of the three remaining seats available to me (WP) on the upper deck.

How far off is the travel date?

09 Dec 2015 is the travel date.

Bronze status (ie. nothing) and that is a commercial ticket in L class. I'm aware of the quirk with award tickets using WP points due to the FQTS field being used ;)

Now we're all thoroughly disappointed that you didn't forgo the terrible seat you ended up with. We need a JohnK review of Y UD. So next time, take one for the team and just say no to 5A :)

(FWIW my UD Y preference is 32K. Will be disappointed when that choice drops away with my drop to SG next year, unless the topic of this thread holds true for all going forward, and $25 may secure me that seat, or no charge for SG?).

I understand that... My point was that he was in a seat that is usually blocked for premium pax..

Given that QF appears like they may have made changes allowing anyone without status to select the upper deck Y seats (albeit at a premium) on the A830 it's not out of the realms of possiblity that they did something with the J restrictions at the same time.

I wish I knew what any seats on the A830 were like.

SG dont pay or or seat selection, but getting that seat isn't easy.

It would appear upper deck row 32 economy does not attract the exit row surcharge and as a Gold you should still have complimentary seat selection.

Not sure when I get another opportunity to try A380 upper deck economy. Miss the days Qantas used to fly them via SIN/BKK/HKG.

The A830 which was released in 2067 on the Earth Mars run didn't have seats. There were cryo deep sleep chambers for the 6 month flight. Later models saw these refurbished with Quantum Disintegration Suppressors for the hyperspace jump when these old birds were put on the Earth Alpha Centauri route. Perth folk still had to travel to Sydney first as Qantas Spaceways never made good on their promises.

We are on that flight that day though we are in the other UD mini cabin.See you in the Flounge?
Presuming you are on QF11.

QF9 unfortunately...
I like the late departure, always nice to have dinner in the F lounge instead of lunch.

I selected UD for my NB colleague SYD - LAX.

He wasn't able to select them himself and I wasn't charged. Must of been before the changes were introduced?

Did you have to call QF?
My understanding is that if you are both on the same PNR your colleague should have access to the same seats as you do. So not sure why he couldn't pick UD through MMB.

Yes I had to call, we were booked on Separate tickets, I was in J and he was in Y. I did ask them to link PNR's in the hope I might be able to do it online, but this didn't work.

Interestingly once it was assigned he wasn't able to change seats via MMB - can't remember the exact error message.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but linking two separate PNR's (i.e creating a TCP) doesn't merge the PNR's into one.

My experience with a TCP (it is going back a while though) is that the seat selection together gets created much closer to the flight (I.e at the theoretical seat allocation near OLCI).

I completely agree, that's why I asked JMFK for some more details. I currently have an award booking for a trip with SWMBO and she is on a paid ticket. Even though I asked QF to link the PNR, she doesn't have access to some seats as a QF SG. So my question to JMFK was more about the possibility of calling QF to get her a seat next to me.
