Upgrading to Business class

Hi guys,

Sorry if this is a dumb question...I checked the forum, but couldn't find a response that specifically answered my question.

My wife and I will be travelling to London in a few months. I've purchased upgradable economy tickets, to upgrade to business class. The Qantas upgrade calculator says that i need 60,000 points from Sydney to Heathrow. I currently have 155,000 points and gold member status.

Before i apply for an upgrade, i want to make sure:
1. if 60,000 point is for 1 way or return?
2. If it is 1 way, will it automatically deduct 120,000 points for both ways on 1 of the tickets?

last thing i want happen is for one of us to be in business and the other to be up the back.

if anyone can advise, it would be much appreciated.

Only tickets booked in Y class (ultra expensive "Full Economy") to London cost 60,000 to upgrade to Business. Otherwise, it's 96,000 each way.

Provided you are both in the same booking, then either none or both of you will be upgraded - not just one of you.

then there is the upgrade lottery. Just because you have Y class fares does not mean you will actually get an upgrade to J - especially that route! Ryan Bingham would have difficulty I expect!

The only way I have worked out to guarantee an upgrade, is to pay the difference between your Y an J class to QF

In addition to the posts above, note that the points are only taken from your account when the upgrade is confirmed, which will be no sooner than 24 hours before departure.

All upgrades are one way, so to upgrade both directions for two passengers, you need 384000 points. Also, if you try to upgrade that one way flight with two people on the same booking, (96000 points x 2 = 192000 points) the request will fail as you have to either upgrade both or neither of the passengers. You don't have enough points to request an upgrade for both unfortunately.

Maybe it's time to apply for a few credit cards with bonus sign-on points to get up to the 192000 point level.

I'm in similar situation, want to book a JASA SYD/LAX/SYD in J for wife and self Aug/Sept 2012, I have 285K points, wife has 35K so even if we buy 20K each still short of the 384K min required, thought of 2 premium economy but its such a lottery getting upgraded using points to J even though I'm SG status.

Also the longer I leave it to book the less chance JASA seats will be available, when there gone from the Q site would cost even more points to call up QF for J seats if any.

If I was in this situation, I would book SYD-LAX sectors in J first and start your trip in relative comfort. Worry about the return sectors afterwards, and in the worse case scenario, you end up flying home in Y .... but at least when you get back, you can have x amount of days to recover in your own bed.

I think your right, could do J one way and PE the other with chance upgrade, might be better to book J on LAX/SYD think over would be easier for PE upgrade to J?.

I'm using JASA not Award booking so can't select PE one way and J the other, dam it.

Because on a JASA it will be more than double the points. The seats in PE are more points than J, dunno why.
