A hypothetical question...

Would you like the ability to use Qantas points to upgrade a Jetstar 787 flight from economy to business class?

And if Qantas were to introduce this, how many points should an upgrade on Jetstar cost?

A bit less than what a Y-PE upgrade would cost on QF.
But I suspect Jetstar is quite happy taking cash for the upgrades instead as they do from time to time.

Save your points. There is no such thing as Jetstar Business class. I recently flew Jetstar "Business" return to coughet. It was bad. Not even near Premium economy. On both legs the seats were broken and the leg room is shocking. My advice would be to pay for a n exit row in Economy.

My last Jetstar J flight from Honolulu to Sydney they ran out of meals. Breakfast and lunch on a 13 hour flight. Both meals. They didn’t just run out of an option but out of actual meals. And we were in Row 2 but on the wrong side obviously. Never going to fly Jetstar again.

It's funny how these LCCs start as spin offs of what are perceived to be legacy carriers with their unnecessarily expensive seats and cabin class costs. They purchase planes that are new for the efficiency and make it a single class for the density. They add on some packages to drive extra revenue per pax like the bundles and then surprise surprise, back come the classes, but they're still nickel and dimed coughpy versions of the legacy carrier products (Scoot's new Scootplus generous 30MB wifi allowance anyone?) and by the end of it you've got what is a slighly cheaper but vastly inferior version of the legacy carrier's products that present nothing more than a veneer of cheap flight tickets to suck in unwitting buyers, upsell them with well marketed cough (bet Jetstar's $8 pot noodles are fantastic) and then cancel their flights and leave them stranded when they can't flog enough tickets.

LCCs are a scourge - change my mind?

Sorry, went 90 degrees off topic there. The answer is no, don't lower the value of mainline FF points with inferior jetstar alternatives. We already have to put up with this where JQ segments get sold into itineraries, which then bring down the cost of the full service carrier itineraries and end up cannibalisng business travel due to cheapest fare criteria leaving business travelers stranded or delayed, as little tie in as possible would be nice so they can ultimately be killed off and the routes reintroduced into mainline when people refuse to give them business.

Jetstar is a ‘niche’ market, and best avoided where possible, even in PE-minus (so-called business) class.

How do you run out of meals? Have they offered or have you asked for compensation?

I tweeted a few times and they just gave me A sorry. Then I tweeted a picture of what we were eventually given for breakfast - a banana. And for lunch they dug up a meal from Y. They offered me 2 $100 Jetstar vouchers but only in my name. I declined and tweeted I’d never fly with J* again.

Ever now and then I think I should try them for a route such as J to HNL (unfortunately I have to catch the J* bogan bus SYD- BNK on a regular basis due to lack of time options).

Thanks for confirming my decision to avoid them at all costs. Lol

Even for Jetstar that's poor to run out of meals. Did they have meals for sale or did they run out of these as well?

I've experienced options not available but even then that could be an issue if you can't eat what they're offering.

I’ve flown JQ “J” several times when the price is right and I’m going to that destination - my expectations are always low and are met every time. But I’d NEVER waste QF points for the coughshoot of a possible upgrade. Never ever at no price ever. Never.

I agree JQ J has it's purpose. I needed a cheap flight to SIN last year and for $500 one way it suited my needs. But I was able to select row 1 with plenty of leg room and no one reclining in to me. And first crack at all the meals. Champagne and usually excellent service makes for a pleasant flight. Would I pay $999 for the same experience? Probably not.

I'd be surprised if JQ were to introduced points upgrades to Business class utilising QF points. With only J 21 seats ( 2 of these seats are actually crew rest seats on most sectors) on board JQ B787's V 35 + J seats on the previous A330 aircraft JQ certainly has certainly slowed down the pre- 14 day email offer to upgrade to business class at bargain basement rates quite tightly nowadays.
That being said, in this era of driving additional ancillary revenue, you never know what might be going through the usual qualitative market research for assessment. ;)
