Don't know how to easily explain my situation....

- Original purchase was return flight on FJ in N class.

- Traveled N class to fiji

- While checking in for the Aus flight, we decided to purchase an upgrade to business class (code unknown), as it was cheap.

- Boarding passes are listed as business, so all good in writing.

My situation is that I dont wish to wait weeks/months for the points and better still SC to be added, so wish to send QF a copy of them to speed it up.

QF: They said over the phone they also want a copy of the original e-ticket info, which shows the class(s) booked. It's only listed as N (economy) class.

FJ: They can't seem to give me any official confirmation or class code (business id that QF use many versions of), nor can they update the e-ticket in regards to an upgrade at checkin.

(So? Hurry up and get on with your story!)

- I want my rightful business SC / points.
- Is there an easy way to prove I'm entitled to more points and sc? (other then boarding pass and purchase receipt)
- Am I being too much of a jerk, should I just wait (forever...)?

Insert any comments as you feel you need to quote, no offence will be taken :)

I've been through the exact same scenario. Booked on FJ as part of a holiday package. Arrived at BNE and J upgrades were being offered at check-in for $$$ so we went for it. SCs came through as Discount Economy after holiday. I contacted FJ customer services and asked them to write a letter stating that we had paid for a business class upgrade and what fare bucket we travelled in. I emailed that through to QFF and additional points and SC were added, whilst I was on the phone to them chasing it up.

Last call to FJ was more helpful, said I'm needing to contact the actual FJ checkout where the purchase was made / bill charged. Now need to wait until Monday 6am - 3pm (oz time) to hopefully get the letter made up....

I'm not having much luck in regards to them telling me the fare bucket they changed me to (from N), all I have officially been told is:

"The upgrade you paid at check-in is a special one way upgrade rate that is only purchased at time of check-in to utilize available Business Class Seats.

For MEL it is FJD400.00 per adult, FJD300.00 per child and FJD50.00 per infant.

Hope the information helps."

That is after making many phone calls to customer service (both 1800 Oz, AS WELL AS +679 Fiji), no one either seems to understand my question (fiji), or that customer service don't have access to fare classes of "purchased at time of checkin" discount upgrades.....

Have sent one more email to both airport manager in Fiji, as well as a customer service email provided to me on my last call just now.....

Mr_Orange: was is told/written to you that it was class J? Should I try my luck phoning QF with the proof of upgrade, but unknown cabin class code? (boarding pass says business).

Re: QF Booking Class?

Finally, after the latest email (sent just before the last message above):

"You are actually paying a discounted “J” one way NANMEL. The J class fare from Nadi to Melbourne is FJD2816.00."

Re: QF Booking Class?

Grrrrrrr: on the phone to QF now, they are saying that since it was purchased at the airport, during checkin; that an upgrade of points & SC are NOT allowed! I did mention it has happened before (no actual names mentioned to them...) with what was required (written proof / fare class of J).

Just spoke to a higher boss.

more to follow.....

Re: QF Booking Class?

I would suggest that you paid for a "seat upgrade", not a "class upgrade". If you had paid for a "class upgrade" your ticket would have been reissued in the upgraded class, however it doesn't sound like that was the case. It is described many times here on AFF. What the boarding pass states is irrelevant as many people get upgraded at check in yet are not eligible for the upgraded points ie: point upgrades and opups.

Re: QF Booking Class?

The QANTAS FF terms say
"Cabin Class Bonuses will not be credited for unpaid travel in, or unpaid upgrades to, a higher class. Members should check the Airline Earning Table for details. Cabin Class Bonuses do not apply to Classic Awards."

As it was a paid upgrade then it should be eligable.

In the past I have just sent in the boarding pass and CC receipt from the upgrade and they have credited the points.

Based on only the above statement that is incorrect, purely from a logicaly point of view. Just because it states that cabin class bonuses will not be credited for certain situations .......does not imply that they will be credited for all other situations. Just because a statement is made that one particular situation is excluded does not imply that all other situations are automatically included.

What I have concluded from circumstances such as these, is to never ever mention "upgrade" when putting in a retrospective claim.;)

Once ones does one is generally SOL!

Use other terms/phrases such as "rebooked".

I had a similar situation with Qantas. Purchased Y LHR to SYD but upgraded to J at check-in. Was told that the SC would be based on my original booking and not the J upgrade. In hindsight, I should have asked them to reissue my ticket as J rather than just getting a new BP.

Upgrades paid for at the airport are generally never entitled to additional points / SCs as the tickets are not reissued and the ticket class is not changed (rather, you just get a better seat). e.g. BA discounted upgrades from LGW to Europe. If you upgrade online prior to the trip, you get the upgraded points/SCs, but if you pay at the airport you do not. The changes are made in the check-in/departure control system and not in the ticketing system at this point.

Welsh-kiwi, on an op-up you almost never get SCs at upgraded class.

As others have mentioned in general these airport paid upgrades are more often than not seat only - often not including lounge access, extra baggage or points/sc's.. Certainly my experience on JQ is this is clearly disclosed, albeit maybe not on FJ.

Seems I was lucky then, as we got the extra points and SC and got lounge access. The FJ check in agent gave us lounge invitations, which at the time I needed, as I was only PS.

Hope you get the SCs points although I understand the difficulty - as others have said there is a difference between a 'rebooked' ticket whereby you were effectively placed into a business class fare bucket on your e-ticket VS a paid 'cabin' upgrade that effectively allowed you to travel in business with an economy class ticket
