Upgradeable QF fares to Europe

I'm planning to travel to Europe, (Germany,) end of June 2013 and am wondering whether I should hope for a sale of the upgradeable fares for mid 2013. At the moment I can get a return SYD - FRA with QF (Sale fare=non-upgradeable) for $2068. The same trip on an QF upgradeable ticket would cost me $3274. Should I hope for sale of these fares? I do not feel like paying $1300 more for a chance for an upgrade. Should I consider other oneworld airline and hope for an upgrade? Thanks for your thoughts.

Seems crazy to me when you could guarantee yourself business class thought the use of US DM or life miles for about the ssame price as the QF sale fare quoted, may be a tad bit more bbut not much. Qantas would love anyone willing to pay that much just for an economy ticket!

To be honest, I know very little or nothing about US DM or life miles and would love to explore other options for my travel needs to Europe. I tried to search the forum for some info but was getting long threads of interesting conversations about ticketing, booking, deals etc, but very little help for a newbie like me. I am basically after the following J fare: SYD-FRA, leaving SYD June 25-30 and returning to SYD September 1-7. Thank you for any assistance.

I'm going to LED via FRA (TG J class) in June, I had 20K United miles and then they ran a 40% off promotions so I bought 130K miles (100K at 40% off + 30K at full price) at a total of about $3200 USD which is less than your upgradable QF Y ticket.

Never pay that much to the greedy Qantas

If you get some US Airways Dividend Miles while they run one of their 50% off propmotions, your J Start Alliance ticket to FRA will be even cheaper - all you need is 120K points for a Saver J award and at the promotional rate it will only be $2100 USD + 7.5%tax (though you can only buy 100k a year so if you don't have 20K in your account already, it's not going to work)

You can buy as many miles as you want in a year with USDM, it is not limited. It is only each individual promo which is limited to 50% bonus, but then you can always buy the extra 20k at full prices and will still have a cheap ticket.
