I'm a Bronze member with I think enough points ( I have around 80,000 points) to use to upgrade to business from economy on my Melbourne to Dubai leg of the trip. The flight I intend to book is a Qantas ticket but the Melb-Dubai leg is operated by Emirates.

Can anyone share how it might be possible to use my points to book this leg of the flight, or any of the longer flights as business or an upgrade? I did it before but was about 10 years ago. I have around 80,000 points.

Thanks :)

QF points for upgrade can only be used on QF marketed (flight number)-QF operated flights. Not on code shares or partner airlines.
Subject to availability can get an award, using QF points, on ff partner airlines.

When you did ~10 years ago QF would have been flying to Dubai DXB. Now does not fly to DXB.

Thank you for your reply, you advice is valued however, I am a bit confused by this though because when I looked on the Qantas website it said Emirates are partners for frequent flyers? https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/earning-points/flights/emirates.html

EK is a ff partner. As is BA, AA, QR and many others
But cannot use QF ff points to upgrade code shares or native flights on those airlines
Earning does not have the same rules as burning (using QF points)

There are many ways you can upgrade with Qantas, including Classic Upgrade Rewards, Bid Now Upgrades and Domestic On Departure Upgrade Rewards.

You can request an upgrade on eligible paid and confirmed tickets on flights operated by Qantas, with a Qantas (QF) flight number on the ticket. From time to time, you can also request an upgrade on codeshare flights that have a QF flight number on your ticket and are operated by another carrier.
But have never read of an upgrade on another carrier.

In short, no. You can only use QF points to upgrade when flying on QF metal on a QF ticket but not on partner airlines You can redeem points for a flight on EK/BA etc but not for upgrades.

ISTR Qantas were making noises a few years ago about introducing points upgrades on EK metal but I guess it was all too hard...

As is the alleged oneworld upgrade system which has been talked about for far too loung with nothing (yet) to show. Star has had it for years - albeit fairly limited in practical use (very restricted fare types one can upgrade from etc).

one of the huge complex issues stopping these things - apart from lack of system integration between carriers to allow such things - is the differing "currencies" involved. Now carriers adopting a single "currency" like Avios (BA, QR,AY) make that part of it much easier.

However QF/EK do not have any process to upgrade with points except for on their own services (eg: EK members can upgrade EK with Skywards points, but not QF and QF FF members can upgrade QF services, bu not EK).
