Hi all. I am QFF Gold and am flying SYD-IAD via LAX. Currently I'm on QF107 for the SYD-LAX leg on a Sunday departure (continuing on AA to IAD), booked in K class economy.

I a have already requested to be upgraded to J for that leg. Right now, on SeatCounter.com, I see the following:

A1 B9 C3 D0 F2 H9 J3 K9 L0 M6 N0 O0 Q0 R0 S0 V0 Y9

However, I know there is another QF flight that leaves 30 minutes before the one I'm booked on (QF149). It is showing 9s in every class except O and Q and the A's and F's are blank.

(Interestingly, ExpertFlyer.com says J0 for QF107 and J9 for QF149)

Here are my questions: What are the odds of my upgrade being granted on QF107 as it stands now? Should I try to change to QF149 (I think it's AU$50 to switch, at least that's what Amex Travel's confirmation says) to get a better shot at upgrading?

Thanks!

There is always more chance of an upgrade with J9/J9 than with J3/J0.

It's up to you if you wish to risk the change fee for a better chance of upgrading.

Not that availability may differ significantly between QF107 SYD-LAX and QF107 SYD-JFK ...

Cool, thanks. I called Amex Travel and had my flight switched to the earlier one. He confirmed that it was wide open in J, so I reckon I have a better shot at an upgrade. Cost me $180 to switch, but worth it if it means I can upgrade for that long of a flight.
