There are some good fares to Tasmania at the moment and since we've never been there I thought I'd take advantage of them.

Before I book, I would like to confirm that it is possible to upgrade using points a Red E Deal to J. If I remember correctly there has to be availability on that flight for J award. Assuming that I can book a Red E deal and upgrade, do I do this after I have booked?

Thanks for any help, I haven't done this before and thought it would be a better way than booking the flights with only points.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Domestically, yes it is possible to upgrade from Red E-Deal to J using Points.

You complete the upgrade request after you have booked the flight.

I think you need it to ticket before you put the upgrade request in or the upgrade may get stuck in the queue. Though if it does get stuck you could give QF a call.

Slight and temporary derail of the thread - can I ask how would I know for sure when a flight gets ticketed? I thought that the trigger for this would simply be when the booking shows as confirmed and I receive the email w/booking ref.

Thanks very much for your help.

How can I find out how many points it takes to upgrade between Brisbane and Hobart.

Upgrade costs are determined by the one-way number of miles between your two destinations. BNE to HBA according to various distance calculators is about 1100 miles, which slides into zone 2 at 17,500 points with the assumption that you're upgrading from discount economy.

In a way, because BNE-HBA is just under 1200 miles, this is technically a pretty sweet spot in the domestic upgrades space. Every now and then I fly SYD-ADL which are only 700 miles apart (at the lower end of zone 2) and upgrade for the same points cost. Ouch.

Thank you Saltywings for your reply. Now I’d better get my act together and book the flights. And have a read of DrRon’s Tasmanian trip reports!

No worries @sanne!

I don't know if this against the rules but feel like it's relevant - I've got a 4-part blog post series on my 2 weeks in Tasmania. Might not be your thing if you're not into hiking/food, but hopefully it's of some utility.

Does Qantas have direct BNE-HBA flights? If not, you would need to request an upgrade for each of the two flights required to get to Hobart. The upgrades are charged separately.

But otherwise yes, can definitely be done.

Well cough, that totally invalidates my previous response. Makes it a fair bit more expensive then (no direct BNE-HBA flights from what I can see).
