Upgrade Clearance on intnl Trips with Domestic Legs?

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere but I can't find it:
Are you less likely to clear a QF long-haul upgrade if the booking contains a short-haul leg?

Suppose you want to book SYD-LAX but SYD-MEL-LAX has the better timing. All other things being equal (status, fare class, etc), if SYD-MEL is J0, does that impede the clearance of MEL-LAX?

Oh no. Each leg is ssessed on its own merits. Other flights in the booking are not relevant.

As indicated, each leg is assessed differently. For one segment the upgrade criteria would be that for an international flight and the other that for a domestic flight.

With that, an upgrade may occur on one, both or none of the legs and any assessment would be independent of the success or failure of the request for the other leg.
