I fly this semi regularly in either of Y or J, only once Y+ (which I wasn't that impressed with). If you can, I'd definitely try for the points upgrade to J. One of the best value use of points.

fingers firmly crossed then!

Seat choice makes the big difference. If you can score a bulkhead you can use a full sized cabin bag on the floor in front of you to create a fully horizontal legrest. Makes sleeping much easier. Plus you don't have someone in front. The recline on the PE seats is generous - if you get stuck behind a recliner it is difficult to get out to access the aisle.

I will definitely try for that then - it sounds like a good idea, thanks

If you have flown domestic QF Business class, you'll be amazed at how similar the products are to international Premium Economy. Very top notch product in the realm of PE offerings in comparison to the other carriers that offer it. QF is simply J- whilst the others are literally Y+. If you do drink alcohol, the PE wine list is identical to the J wine list, other than the champagne of course. PE gets an Australian sparkling, though still a top notch sparkling product! :)

the food and alcohol don't interest me a bit- I'm much more concerned with sleeping- we're flying back at 11.30pm so, the first half of the flight will certainly see me sleeping, either comfortably in a flat bed or trying to in PE.

Agreed with CX PE is economy plus and CX J is more comfortable than QF J

i'd agree with that- in fact, i'm sure nothing much else compares to CX/J - it spoils you for everything else. (although Virgin Bus is really great)

QR J definitely takes it up to CX easily beating them in the soft product stakes. A la carte dining, mattress, pyjamas.

Not sure I agree with your second statement after todays flight. The CX business seat is not that comfortable for an 8h 45m flight.

I find the QF seat part comfortable, but not suitable for my height, as the foot rest is to short or when not deployed uncomfortable against your calf ...

so surprising. i've generally found the seats, the food and the service so excellent.
But must admit I have not tried QR yet. perhaps next year.

Sometimes I sit forward in the seat especially for meals. The armrests are not even or if they are meant to be even I didn't see how to do it.

I know this is going off topic, but you definitely 'popped up' the armrest on the aisle side on the CX seat JohnK?

Absolutely. On the window side the armrest rises slightly where the dinner table comes out and is uneven with aisle armrest.

Last year I was on a 747 in Premium economy and the foot rest barely moved out. Is this the normal.

I had previously travelled premium economy a few years ago on an A380, I thought then that the footrest came out much more. And am I wrong in this assumption?

They are not the best design. The calf support that comes out from the seat is as you note, next to useless. However the second stage metal foot support folds out of that but then ratchets up to a couple of stops that can provide better foot support. Or sacrifice your blanket and pillow (or someone else's) to balance on it and you finally have something that can just about support your legs.

Darn, I didn't realise that, and I even asked the FA and she said that that was all it came out. Never said anything about the metal footrest.

I found the seat was good/great but damn it was stinking hot laying in that chair. Not the fault of the chair exactly but overall it was terribly uncomfortable. Food was pretty cough but I knew it would be and just got off CX F + lounge tour so didn't care.
