AAdvantage members must purchase between 15,000 and 19,000 AAdvantage miles in a single transaction from the buyAAmiles® program to be eligible to earn 2,000 bonus miles. Members must purchase between 20,000 and 29,000 AAdvantage miles in a single transaction to be eligible to earn 4,000 bonus miles. Members must purchase between 30,000 and 39,000 AAdvantage miles in a single transaction to be eligible to earn 7,000 bonus miles. Members must purchase between 40,000 and 49,000 AAdvantage miles in a single transaction to be eligible to earn 10,000 bonus miles. Bonus miles earned do not count toward the annual limit. AAdvantage miles purchased or earned through this promotion do not count toward elite-status qualification or Million MilerSM status.

Took AAdvantage of this yesterday.

First class NRT-ORD-LAX for 62.5k and USD45.20.

Booked and held until Wednesday then purchased miles; ~USD1515 all up.

Note that the 50k is likely to hit the account within a day, the 15k, a day or three later.

Note that the availability was also bookable on Qantas.com, but QFF wanted 144,000 points and goodness knows how many $$$.

I took advantage of this last week as I managed to book MEL-LAX(F)-JFK(J) which was great timing as the AA Award was only released that day. The points (including bonus) posted within 24 hours. It was lucky because I didn't read the T & C's closely and after purchase I had a recollection of bonus points in the past not posting until the end of the promotion. I also stuffed up my maths and was a few hundred points short which meant I had to pay the transaction fee again. No big deal in the overall scheme of things.

Not sure how this all works, from what I gather one joins AA Advantage, buys miles with the current bonus then uses them for flights?.

What does 50,000 miles cost? plus bonus 15,000 miles

~USD1515

That's get you 65000 miles (50K + 15K). With this promo you can go to 75000 miles (60K + 15K) for around USD1810.

Note you can generally only puchase 60K per calendar year.

How many miles are needed to fly OW say IAD-LAX-SYD in J? And how much in taxes?

62.5 in J, 72.5 in F.

Not too sure about taxes, it wouldn't be more than 150

It's not as good as the Christmas promotion (if we'll get to see a promo as good as that again), but if you want it now it's still good value.

And interesting to see that NRT/ORD/LAX is within the MPM for NRT/LAX.

Think I will stick to UDSM, better offers which means the points cost will be lower when they come across.

As I understand it about redeeming with USDM, you pay for roundtrip whereas with AA, you may use half of roundtrip for OW. I stand for correction though.

USDM miles will become AA miles with a conversion of 1:1, which is the point I am making, if you don't need miles in the near future for a trip, building a bank with USDM makes more cents (sic).

Which makes better cents (sic):

Fly IAD-JFK-SYD in J for 62.5k (or even 72.5k in F)
or
Fly IAD-LHR in Y for around $600 to connect to MH in J for LHR-SYD via KUL for 51k Enrich miles?

The 51k for MH would be a straight transfer (1:1) from Amex, no cash outlay. Buying AA miles would mean cash outlay. Travel end-Aug.

I bought in the offer early this year so am not able to buy any more till next year. Just wondering if you try to buy more, it picks it up and knocks you back - any one tried it?

Can you pool family points together with AA ?
Might have to get onto this...

I heard you can do LAX-HKG on CX F for 62.5k points.

No. If you want to transfer points amongst members (including family), you need to pay a fee for it (Sharing Miles).

AFAICT you can redeem awards for others with your points, however - maybe someone can clarify this.

Well, 67.5k actually. One-way F from North America to Asia 2.
