What's not looking good JohnK? - the reddit feed situation looks pretty good to me.
The situation in Hong Kong of course.

China needs to move into the 21st century along with the rest of the civilised world. Their problem though is they haven't quite embraced the 20th century yet.

I listened to a podcast yesterday where a Chinese official stated that Hong Kongers have an "over abundance" of democracy. I guess they do, compared to citizens of North Korea.

Again, Chinese Govt telling other countries to keep out of China's business. They seem to think its a plot to bring down the Chinese Govt. Now, there are a lot of police in front of Executive's office in case more protestors come to storm Govt offices.

China turning on the economic screws by cancelling hundreds of China tours to HKG which come daily with big spending Chinese visitors esp in Golden Week. Perhaps the turning point is nigh.

Doubt there's much economic impact from cancelling of tours - the big spenders are now in Europe where luxury goods are cheaper or in jail due to the corruption crackdown!

This will get the footpaths unclogged and slow down sales of baby milk powder and toilet paper but not much else!

Anyone in China at the moment? Interested to see the coverage it's getting. I'll be there on the 12th for the Canton fair but would be surprised if the stuff in HKG is still going on by then.

Au contrarie, a lot of wealth in China and apparently it is having an economic impact here as it's a major spending holiday thwarted. Same as per capita, as I seem to remember reading that the visitors spending most per day to Aus are the Chinese. Those Chinese not on those tours are still coming.

I think the happenings in HK are not being publicised in China. Cancelling all these tours could be more to do with reducing mainland visitors from seeing the protests in case they get ideas.

I am pleased to report the following:

1. Took a bus past Temple Street in Jordan... Business as usual there so would think that the Ladies Market in Mongkok would be ok...

2. Went to TST today for dinner (on the eastern side at Carnavon Road, Mira Hotel etc...) business as usual over there... Havent seen the western side near Gateway, Harbour City etc (where all the big name boutiques are)

3. Visited Occupy Mongkok this afternoon. Protestors are based near corner of Nathan Road and Argylle Street so some sections of thise roads are closed. Relatively small gathering. Shops in thay vicinity are open though and business as usual.

So looks like all is relatively fine on the Kowloon Peninsula :)

The country is on par with the rest of the "civilised" world in terms of greed, envy, false pride and so on.

A lot of mainlanders know about it - I asked a mainland friend and her response was 'we're not stupid, we know what's going on'. Everyone jumps the Great Firewall.

I heard that visas into HK from mainland China had been cancelled.

I can't see China giving into the protestors. That isn't what they do. I do admire the protestors though.

Now staying in Wan Chai - some roads barricaded but all seems peaceful, shops and restaurants open. MTR very crowded - many people with big cameras. Some escalation in protest activity now with activities at Government offices. Walked to Admiralty last night - big crowds but no apparent agitation.

HKG in my experience is costly for accommodation but now would be good time to get value- for-money stays.
