United Airlines Delays/Cancellations

With Wednesday 15 January's bushfire-related smoke haze causing MEL to shut I gather the east-west runway from roughly 1115 late morning, UA99 (B789 N27965, the 1130 hours MEL - LAX) is having quite a wait for its takeoff roll, which should occur shortly at around 1250, about 55 minutes to an hour late.

With the rainy weather in SYD on Thursday 16 January 2020, UA839 from LAX to SYD (B789 N27964) diverted to CBR, spending until 1103 there and arriving SYD at 1139, 169 minutes late.

Optimistically, UA842 is expected to push back 70 minutes late at 1300 hours in SYD for LAX.

Saturday 18 January saw the diversion of UA101 IAH-SYD (B789 N17963) to AKL. The diverted leg AKL-SYD arrived at 16 02, 542 min late. Consequently, UA101 SYD-IAH had to be retimed to 18 00, with actual departure at 19 18, arrival to IAH is now revised to 16 50, 415 min behind schedule

UA99 (B789 N38950, the Sunday 19 January 1130 hours MEL - LAX in the sky at 1353) should arrive at 0847 hours same day, 122 late.

Again, this time on Sunday 26 January, UA99 is tardy, taking off 150 minutes at 1400 hours after scheduled 1130 pushback, so same day arrival for B789 N26970 is likely at 0856 hours, 131 late.

Wednesday 11 March 2020 has UA98 from LAX to MEL (B789 N24976) likely to arrive at 1046 hours, 136 minutes late. This means UA99, the 1030 hours back to LAX will be unable to depart until at least 1155 hours, so passengers will be at least 90 minutes late arriving in distant LAX.

During coronavirus on Friday 5 June 2020, UA870 (1030 hours midmorning SYD - SFO, B789 N19951, took off at 1149 with suggested same day arrival at 0759 hours, 49 minutes tardy.

During coronavirus on Saturday 25 July 2020, UA870, the scheduled 1030 hours midmorning from SYD up to SFO was cancelled.

SYD and BNE have strict limits on inbound passenger numbers per flight (and per day across all airlines) while MEL has a ban on inbound passengers from overseas, so while airlines can carry freight both ways and in theory can fill all seats with passengers outbound from Oz, these restrictions can make it uneconomic to operate into and out of Oz at present. QFi is not operating any international flights and neither is VAi (if that division exists any longer).

Given the COVID-19 east coast Oz airport total daily international arrival restrictions and on top of that, no more than 50 revenue passengers inbound per plane, it has become fairly rare for a USA carrier to send a passenger flight to Australia.

On Sunday 9 August 2020, UA870, the scheduled 1200 'high noon' from SYD to SFO (B789 N24974) departed at 1345 but did not take off, on a rainy Sydney day, until 1434 hours. Arrival is predicted as 1049 hours, 129 late.

UA842, the Monday 11 January 2021 SYD - LAX due to pushback at 1150 hours if the timetable was maintained should instead perform that at 1330 this afternoon. The aircraft, B789 N24976 arrived (ex SFO) in SYD this morning at 0918 hours, only 13 late so not sure what's gone awry.

UA870, the 1400 hours Thursday 14 January 2021 SYD - SFO should instead depart at 1100 on 15 January. Perhaps a crew member is sick if it's not a defective aircraft?

On Thursday 23 December 2021, UA842, the 1120 hours late morning SYD to LAX was cancelled, but UA870, the 1400 hours SYD - SFO operated.

A few days ago, United Airlines took out a full page ad in 'The Australian' stating how it had maintained passenger flights to and from Australia during COVID-19 with this costing it money as the flights could not be full due to government decrees. It had a not-so-subtle dig at QFi with UA saying 'it (UA) wasn't the airline passengers would expect to have done this' or similar.

A few friends have mentioned how QFi abandoned regular flights to and from numerous international destinations (unless in receipt of Federal Government subsidies) but other airlines kept these operating. True.

It made up for it in freight but it does have a point. Also UA flew to a country with less Covid prevalence. Harder the other way round??

hope you are well M1!!

Like many AFFers I know wishing is good time wasted, but on secular matters, being able to travel more easily overseas and not be hindered by 'testing' or 'quarantine' is #1 request for calendar 2022. Thanks!!

On Christmas Day 2021, UA842, the 1120 hours SYD - LAX has been given the flick. So has competing DL40 due to concurrently pushback.

UA863, the late evening 2255 hours Christmas Day SFO - SYD (B773 N2749U) took off at 0059 hours on Boxing Day, so Monday 27 December 2021 arrival is predicted at 1008, 63 minutes behind schedule.
