With the very wet weather in and around SYD and the Australian lower east coast on Sunday 5 June 2016, UA870, the 1030 hours SYD to LAX (B789 N26952) is about to take off at 1254 or so, with arrival likely at approximately 0855, an hour and 55 late.

On Wednesday 13 July, UA98 ex LAX is arriving in MEL at roughly 0814, 49 minutes late. Aircraft is B789 N19951.

Tuesday 9 August sees UA98, the 2235 hours Sunday 7 August LAX - MEL arriving at about 0835, 70 minutes late. Aircraft is B789 N17963. Meanwhile DL has been in meltdown worldwide, so at least 'The friendly skies' have got passengers to their destination.

UA162: GLA-EWR departing on 27Aug16 was delayed over 9 hours because the pilots were arrested for allegedly being drunk.
Replacement crew had to be found but from where as GLA is not a UA hub

On Wednesday 26 October UA863 from SFO should pull in to the SYd terminal at about 0839, 49 minutes tardy: plane is B789 N27965.

Friday 28 October sees UA843, the Wednesday 26 2255 hours from SFO to SYD (B789 N38955) not having taken off until 0041 on Thursday; hence, Friday arrival should be at 0846, 56 minutes delayed. This should not (in theory) delay the returning UA870 as that is timetabled to depart from SYD at 1130.

M1 there is a bit more:

Oct13: UA98 B789 SFO-MEL cancelled due to mechanical difficulties. therefore the return UA99 on Oct 15 cancelled

Oct14: UA863 B789 SFO-SYD cancelled due to mechanical difficulties. Therefore the return UA840 on Oct 16 cancelled.

Oct 29: UA863 B788 SFO-SYD cancelled mechanical issues. Therefore return UA870 also cancelled on Oct 31

Oct 30: UA839 B789 LAX-SYD cancelled due to crew issue?. Therefore the return UA840 also cancelled on Nov 01

There was discussion in other media about the despatch reliability of the B78x being "stellar" and use of replacement parts being far below expected levels.

Further to my earlier post. An interesting service recovery by UA

On 30/10/16 UA863 (N29961) arrived from SFO into SYD and was suppose to operate UA 840 to LAX on 1/11/16

However the same night's LAX-SYD UA 839 was cancelled.

So UA840 became UA870 SYD-SFO departing 2.5 hours late but arriving 1hr35 min late. It then formed UA2136 SFO-LAX finally arriving into LAX at 1351 (some 7hr 45 min after UA 840 would have arrived).

Bear in mind that the airline had to change routing from SYD-LAX to SYD-SFO I suspect because UA870 was cancelled the day before on Oct31. As a premium flight there could not possibly be 2 consecutive cancellations into the Golden Gate and Google city??. The airline would have had to do musical chairs with 3 lots of passengers bound for the US west coast - UA870 from the day before, UA870 from the day of, and UA840 from the day of. Though very advanced notice of this would have occurred because the incoming aircraft never took off from LAX (UA839)

There are possibly 2 reasons for the SFO-LAX tag flight:
There may have been a small number of LAX bound passengers who could not wait for another flight. Maybe high tier million milers.
I thought of a second reason but I dont think its too material because the aircraft in question N29961's next mission was as UA32 to NRT the following day.

(Interestingly FA is showing an 2 UA840 on 2/11/16. The second UA840 is tonight at 2241hrs?. I dont think it is a valid flight. Probably just a gremlin.

On saturday 5 November in the morning at least, SYD was largely down to using just runway 25, so many delays ensued.

UA870, the 1130 SYD - SFO (B789 N27965) took off at 1315 so same day arrival should be at about 0758, 48 minutes behind schedule.

Thursday 24 November 2016 sees UA839 from LAX to SYD likely to arrive at 0929, 44 minutes tardy with plane B789 N27964. AA73 is a small number of minutes behind and almost identically late.

On Sunday 18 December, UA839 from LAX to SYD (B789 N27965) should arrive at roughly 0933 hours, 48 minutes tardy.
 
Ground stop at SFO applied from 1220 today 23 Dec 16 local time due to areas of flooding. Airport delay but causes airline delays. As United has a hub here it gets the news here.

Should be lifted in 1 hour?.
 
On Wednesday 28 December, UA98 should arrive in MEL at about 0956, 31 minutes late. B789 N27965 is the conveyance.

UA839 from LAX to SYD is identically late with B789 N35853 likely to pull up at the airport gate at 0916 hours.

Friday 10 February 2017 sees UA99, the late morning 1125 hours MEL - LAX not having taken off until 1321, so expected arrival of B789 N-17963 is not until about 0813, 78 minutes tardy.
 
On Friday 17 February, UA840, the 1130 SYD - LAX was not in the sky until 1354; arrival should be at 0805, 95 late. N36962 is the B789.
 
Saturday 18 February sees UA98, the longhaul from LAX to MEL suggested as arriving 31 minutes behind at 0956. Aircraft is B789 N26960.
