In 2012 flew SYD-BKK-VCE, ATH-BKK-SYD 6 sectors. Result from Skywards 11,000 miles. Useless for anything as far as I can see.

Will get you from CBR to OOL, BNE, LST, MEL, or maybe ADL (1 way), and that's about it.

The same itinerary on QF (if possible) would net you approx 18,000 QF points.

Using dajop's example : CBR-OOL-CBR = 18,000 points + ~$160 tax to redeem on QFF.

Given QFF points are worth ~1c/each, this means that you're essentially paying $160 + $180 = $340. The cheapest CBR-OOL-CBR is currently ~$370.
Another way to look at this is the difference between the paid flight and your taxes ($370 - $160 = $210 is worth 18,000points)

So if that trip you did is worth ~$200 in QFF points - what is 11,000 emirates points worth?

Same CBR-OOL-CBR using EK points is 15,000 + almost no tax.

So compared to QFF, your 11K EK points are just as valuable IMO.

You should try and use some of the Skyward Miles. Near impossible, EK just don't release seats for upgrade use out of Melb.
Emirates are a joke, a very cruel joke, all these points and can't use them.:(

Well, yes you're basically right. Even if you are Emirates Gold (as I am), the earning rate is still pathetic and you now can't use the points to upgrade a cheap Y class fare on popular routes.

But Emirates don't care, as they are able to entice as many PAX as they wish to their wonderful hub in the United Arab Emirates.

With the changes that have just happened, you basically need to pay the $600 extra to buy a flexi fare to use points to upgrade. Bonus is you earn more miles to make up for the $600 extra, and the amount of miles used to upgrade is less.

I think comparing points from one airline to another is like comparing Milk and Coke. Sure both are drinks (Airlines) but they are different and would be dam boring if they were all the same. Hell if every airline was like jetstar.....

You fly/book an airline because they deliver the best value for money. You make an informed choice to book and fly. And getting sour over how they have commercially structured their Frequent Flier program is just wrong. Pointing out, in a positive way, why you think one is better than another however, is what I feel this forum is about.

I hope you're not referring to me. I'm just telling you how it is. No sourness at all.

And when I wish to redeem an award flight in C/J class, I use UA or QF. Much better redemption rates than EK, and you get the whole of Star Alliance and One World to choose from. EK has become too arrogant.

Welcome to AFF, you may find after spending more time here that the sour and the sweet occur in equal measure ;)

I've just looked in Skywards at redeeming points and they say the minimum points required to book a flight are 12,500. Using partner airlines the minimum with QF is 19,000 points. Easyjet can be booked from 7,500 points, but don't fly in Australia.

What website would I use to to book one of the options listed above - say CBR to LST?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have spoken to EK, and they were very sympthetic. But there are no upgrade seats available. I asked if I could change flights would that help. She looked but nothing 4 days either side.

I'd check on EF (or ask someone with EF membership to look for you).
