Had a unusal occurence at BNE domestic when going through the priority security screening point, my bag was pulled aside and then I was asked "Do you have a Umbrella in there?", I replied I did and was then told "Umbrellas must be scanned seperately".
Not being one to make a fuss I gladly obliged, but it left me thinking why wasn't that the case in SYD?

Brisbane domestic screening are sticklers for Umbrella scanning - mrsdoc gets hers "caught" quite often (it seems to hide behind the kitchen sink in her handbag and she "forgets" it was in there).

CBR also insists on separate screening (at least with QF). I've explicitly asked at the ADL screening point and was told not to bother removing my umbrella from my bag.

yes, and Canberra is also strict on the umbrella rule with the screeners always asking about them before the bag goes into the xray machine.

Ahhh, that explains it. We were up there last weekend and I was specifically asked “Do you have any umbrellas in there?” which caught me by surprise. I don’t remember being asked that one before...

Ditto to being asked about umbrellas at BNE screening a few weeks ago. The only time I can ever recall being asked (I didn't have one).

Consistency is so good! :)

Interesting that is seems only BNE and CBR ask this, must be the dangerous umbrellas they get through there.
Didn't get asked if I had a Umbrella in there before hand, hence the suprise when my bag was pulled aside and I was asked about the umbrella.

There are variations between the airports in terms of security.

For example, on last week’s Qld vacation trip my wife put a new children’s craft kit in our daughter’s little roll-a-board and, as we went through security at SYD, they wanted to take a look at her bag. It turned out that hidden within all the craft stuff was a pair of children’s scissors (the type with the blunt, rounded ends). We’d never opened the kit so we weren’t aware they were there. As a frequent flyer, and more importantly as an AFF member ;), I was of course mortified that my wife had done this  so we apologised and allowed the guy to dispose of the scissors.

Anyway on heading back through BNE (where I was ultimately asked about the umbrella) our daughter started to cry as we approached security and one of the guys asked us why. We explained about the scissors at SYD and he said that the rounded, blunt versions are not prohibited and they should have allowed us to keep them. Now I’m not sure what the specific rules are, but there does seem to be an inconsistent approach at times.

BNE is definitely after umbrellas - you are often asked, and if seen you are asked to remove it, and get it re-scanned.

Although, it doesn't always seem to apply. I've forgotten it once or twice and wasn't chased up.

Don't you just love the inconsistency in security screening?
It really makes the whole thing look like a farce.

I'm flying to Sydney next week from melbourne and will have my MacBook air on me which I always take out if my bag for scanning, thing is I'll also have a new MacBook air in still sealed box, it will be a gift, do you think they will make me open the box, ie take off the clear plastic wrap on the apple box, the gift won't be wrapped at that stage?

I don't think I have ever been asked that in PER...

... probably cos we don't have rain.

Aerosol deodorant, on the other hand, is public enemy #1. And if you've ever sat next to certain FIFO blokes coming home from the minesite, you will HATE security for the rest of your days!

CBR no longer requires umbrellas for screening - the first week the new airport opened I was advised umbrellas no longer need screening by security staff - and have been through every week since with the umbrella in the bag. :)

I haven't yet had to remove my umbrella from my bag in BNE although PPP are very fussy with umbrellas.

Good to know. Although I don't own an umbrella and so don't expect to be taking one on my next trip to Canberra.

my understanding is that aerosol is ok, aerosol without a cap is not ok.

Do I even want to ask what the logic behind that is?

I have only ever been asked if I have an aerosol, to which the answer is always 'no' so never got asked the specifics...

When the lid is not on, the aerosol is more prone to hav ing the nozzle accidently pressed releasing the contents of whatever it is.

Not in BNE, person behind me got there bag pulled aside by security and had to dipose of the aerosol (with the cap).

I'm not sure about that, in syd I've seen them send the aerosol separately through the x-ray.
