Last poll. 54 in. Markets up. But 2 hours until strong result.

I did read where the first results were expected to be from areas which would favour remain.
I still expect remain to win though.

Yes I think remain will be the result and I'm personally and for my family in the UK glad about it.

Followed by Newcastle. Very close, but remain. It's going to be a long night, but I would have expected Newcastle to be clearer about Leave IMHO.

I hadn't thought about it before but I heard on radio (Deutsche Welle via News Radio) all the Poms living in Spain being worried about the UK leaving as they all thought they'd get kicked out.

What if it was up to all the other EU nations to decide if the UK stayed in or not? :mrgreen:

Early opinion polls had favored the "Remain" camp. An Ipsos MORI poll put the lead at 8 points while a YouGov poll found 52 percent of respondents said they voted to remain in the EU while 48 percent voted to leave.
Yet a trickle of official results showed the margins were nail-bitingly tight. Traders were particularly spooked by returns from Sunderland showing a large majority for the "Leave" camp and just a narrow win for "Remain" in Newcastle.
"Newcastle was a squeaky win for Remain but Sunderland was a huge kick in the ribs and the bottom has fallen out of the pound," said Jeremy Cook, chief economist at international payments company, World First. "These markets are thin, liquidity is poor and a recovery is obviously possible but those traders who were looking to book a quick profit before a restful night’s sleep have had their ideas shattered.”
The result from North Warwickshire also showed a much stronger turnout for Leave than many expected.

Great dissertation from Hagai on particularly the cons of Bremain. I wonder if the Brexiters have a vested interest in the instability of Britain and EU after a successful "Yes" vote? One hopes it doesn't come to that.

There is a lot of rhetoric from both sides because nobody knows what could happen in the void if the "Yes" vote is successful (contagion, Russia/China/North Korea inflaming the situation by agitation) in exactly the same way that nobody knew what it would be like after the EU was set up. One never should think that it's easy to have so many countries agree to the common good...but it's better than the reverse.
