Hi guys

I have a friend travelling from the US in about a month with the initial flights of LAX-SYD on United metal, and then SYD-PER on QF Metal.

He is wanting to upgrade from Disc Y on the SYD-PER leg to business.

The flights are United ticketed and he is 1K status.

Can he upgrade via United with Miliage Plus noting that it is * Alliance not OneWorld?

He has requested other upgrades which would exhaust his points. Could i use my QF points somehow to upgrade for him?

He has some AA points but no status.

What other options may there be?

Cheers

Rob

Yes - have the flight number and his name and booking reference.

Ring Qantas, tell them your cousin is travelling from Sydney to Perth and you would like to upgrade him/her with your points.

If upgrade not available ask to be "registered" for an upgrade.

Time is of the essence with these as Business U inventory dries up.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

You can only use Qantas points to upgrade QF metal.
AFAIK you cannot use any other program (even other oneworld airlines) to upgrade QF metal.

I believe Qantas domestic upgrades generally require being booked on the QF code, but if you have the Qantas (Amadeus PNR) YMMV

Only QF points from their own frequent flyer program are permitted to be used for flight upgrades.

Besides the flight you wish to do the upgrade on being Qantas metal it must be booked/sold as a QF marketed flight not a codeshare, however I don't believe QF codeshare with UA at all so I'm fairly certain that although the SYD/PER flight may have been booked through UA and ticketed on UA '016' ticket stock it will be a QF flight number.

I've only ever done one or two points upgrades domestically which have been on QF '081' ticket stock so not sure if there's any restrictions about upgrade requests not being allowed on any other carriers ticket stock.

Have successfully upgraded domestic on JAL issued stock and have successfully upgraded international on Finnair issued stock.

You are right - all they need is the QF flight number which they'll have as no codeshare with UA.

It may be possible to do the request online - you will need to use your QFF points.

Firstly you need to find out his Qantas (Amadeus) booing reference.

Then log onto your QFF account and select "your bookings".

Toward the bottom of the screen you will see "Upgrade a family member" ...

Of you go for your brother in law, cousin or whatever the most applicable relationship would apply.
