UA - UA MCT at LAX

Hi guys,
I am looking at flying MEL-ORD via LAX on UA.

The UA website dislpays their preferred option of an arrival into LAX at 9.53am and a departure to ORD at 11.08am.

Is this possible?
Why would they allow such a short MCT. Will UA re-route free-of-charge if this connection is missed?

Any response appreciated.

If on the one booking then UA will protect you onto the next available flight.

You will need to clear customs/immigration and then clear domestic security; tight but doable.
