Just a warning to anyone intending using the Burnley / Domain Tunnels and Monash freeway to get to / from MEL airport this afternoon / evening.

There has been an accident in the east-bound Burnley tunnel. Both tunnels now closed until at least this evening, possibly tomorrow.

Monash Freeway apparently chaotic with inbound traffice being diverted off at Warrigal Road.

Sad accident that one this morning.

Tunnels have always worried me especially the M5 tunnel in Sydney. I can hardly breathe at the best of times let alone if there was a hold up for 1/2 hour or more. Makes me think whether it is worth using it just to save 10 minutes or so getting to the airport.

On most occasions the tunnels in Melb are worth a whole lot more than 10 min.

I saw the SkyNews story on this accident at 9.00pm and it reminded me of a "Seconds from Disaster" show where a similar accident happened in Europe (France, Switzerland?).

When I first saw the thread, I rang IainF in case he was in MEL and on his way to the airport tonight. He was on his way, but from Sydney CBD.
