And the South African players and media given their current captain Faf has been caught altering balls twice, and never missed a single game

But I'm glad CA has been harsh - sets a very strong precedent for the next person caught

So when a SA player is next caught ball tampering, I’m sure they will get a good talking to. Not much else will happen, just as with the English.

Sure. But bear in mind that they had no say in what Cricket Australia decided.
I don’t think CA decided anything about this saga within a cone of silence. Clearly the return of Smith to a leadership role depends partly on the acceptance of the fans and the rest of the team.

For those thinking that 12 months is not harsh enough, I think that Smith and Warner will be dealt much harsher blows by having become instant pariah's.

Add to that they will have gone from being top in their field, to bystanders. Mentally this will all be crushing. Warner will never play cricket for Australia again. Steve Smith probably will, but will never captain again. He will live his life now forever known as a cheat.

The normal doors that open to ex-cricketers will all be firmly closed at present.

Smith's fall from grace will be particularly severe. Who else has fallen from so high so hard, so swiftly?

Compared to other ball tamperers their punishment is going to be orders of magnitude greater.

Their punishment is deserved. But it is also harsh. I do fear somewhat for their mental state down the track.

It may seem harsh but totally deserved. They're not politicians or bankers so will be held accountable for their sins, for a little while at least.

Normal people in basic jobs do stupid things every day and their punishment of losing their job, and career goes unreported. Yet their penalty of job loss, financial ruin etc is basically ignored and overall harsher than these so called elite sportsmen. Well maybe they are elite athletes but definitely scumbags as people.

Our cricketers have worked hard (as have most of us) and are being paid huge amounts of money including from the public purse. They have the benefit of support services and a retinue of advisors to guide them.

That they cheated so blatantly suggests they don't believe they are required to adhere to the normal standards of society.

Frankly, they owe it to the rest of us to slink off having been severely punished and to shut up about how hard their privileged lives are compared to the rest of us. They were paid top money to perform at the highest level, if they see the need to cheat and lie to us then they have forfeited any future opportunities to suck off the public teat.

As for their mental health, yes I agree they need to be supported but they also need to understand what they have done wrong and how to deal with situations in the future where they may be placed in such circumstances.

Would you want your children to be exposed to these people during their sporting pursuits?

Remember Shane Warne was banned for 12 months IIRC for drug use and came back as good as ever. He never captained Australia though he would have been eccellent at it. His offfield dalliances I'm sure didn't elp his public image

I posit his off field antics played a huge role in cultivating Warney's public image. I wouldn't be surprised if he hammed it up on purpose sometimes - I still feel a tad sorry for Simone though....

Sandpaper. They actually used sandpaper. With Warner instructing Bancroft on how to do it. Toxic person. I hope Smith finds a way back to cricket. Warner can just, go away. Don’t want to hear from him again. Bancroft may or may not find his way back; there are plenty of others who will fill that gap. He was lucky to be there in the first place. I don’t really care there.

The punishment is about right. I think it will be enough to prevent a return to Oz cricket for Warner; he won’t get the crowd support, they won’t pick him as he will be out of form and a team distraction. He will make his money playing IPL eventually. Smith hopefully can somehow retain form without playing officially. Bancroft - meh.

I’ll post it again, nothing happens to the cricket ball without the bowler knowing about it. Which one?

When I saw the photo my first thought was sandpaper and how many of us have that lying around when travelling.

Meaning someone had to go out, find a SA hardware store to buy it or toddle into dads garage to find some before packing it with the baggy green for the trip.

Is this what the juniors are being taught these days? Crazy. Just nuts.

I don't agree about all the punishments, Smith & Bancroft's punishment is too harsh. Warner on the other hand though, comes up with the plans, instructs a junior how to do it and then lied to all saying he had absolutely nothing to do with it and let the other 2 face the music of his master plan - a completely grubby and dog act.

Sandpaper is actually a pretty common item in a professional batsmen's kit bag. The reason for this is that their bats a lot of the time get small marks or ships on them, so they need to sand them down. Some of them also change bat sponsors for different formats, so while they don't actually change the bat they will change the sponsor sticker on it, and where some of the sticker remains they will use the sandpaper to rub it off.

I did not know this! Thanks for the intel, I thought damaged bat = get a new bat.

Sandpaper is actually used to smooth the edges of the bats etc.....there are some superstious players who don't like a red mark on the edge of their bat and will sandpaper the mark off ASAP, so I suspect most players will have sandpaper in their kit. So it is not as bad as you think!

Okay so now the additional CA sanctions have been released. Time to move on and give them some space to contemplate their future and for us to focus on the next Test.

Perhaps the actual time out is less important than the cash flow.
These guys have been printing money , so the quantum of the applied, "real" financial penalty would be interesting to see.
Their contracts may well have clauses that protect some or even most of their income.
No chance either of them will be visiting centrelink…….

Any shorter banishment and it’s no real penalty at all due to season timings.

They'd miss a test series and a 5 or 6 limited over series, that's a fair whack of potential game payments there - so to say it would be no real penalty is misleading.

A six month ban would only see them missing some one day/T20 fixtures. This is the Test Team. The teams are very different.

It had to be a 12 month ban or they would not miss any Test matches other than the one starting tomorrow. Anything less would not be enough. As previously stated.

Yes I agree and have said a few times now that there needs to be a care path put in place by the CA team. I think Smith is at significant risk. He doesn’t have the same anchors that Warner has (no children but that doesn’t always anchor anyway). He does have parents and fiancée but is it enough after a life of cricket?

As a general statement, just because things are stated multiple times doesn't mean it is right or that everyone has to agree.
I have been saddened by quite a bit of the media coverage and the judgement and anger being expressed by the public-I think I now identify modern bullying better though
I am also surprised by some comments from ex-players-would their actions have survived the scrutiny of today's technology?
The cricketers made bad decisions and are now facing the consequences. I hope the Australian public can behave better that the mob at JNG airport
