For non-chain hotels where you don’t have status, and assuming Virgin hotels are priced competitively, that’s a pretty good deal.

Whenever I've looked using this partnership the hotels I'm interested in aren't listed / more expensive / pay now instead of pay at hotel.

I think the Expedia offering was a lot better, though also moved to pay now instead of pay at hotel, even though the same search on Expedia would give the pay at hotel option.

Interesting if anyone has any experiences of booking?

Rocket travel is around $75-100 more expensive than Agoda for 3 nights in Palawan.

You do have to compare a few sites. Later this year we are spending 4 weeks in Hokkaido and driving around for 3 weeks. So staying at smaller towns at times. I have booked what I can direct but not easy for some as either the booking page diverts to booking.com or the website is all Japanese and often impossible to navigate. unfortunately the timing is out as past the stay period for this promotion though still earn some VA points.
So I have booking, agoda and rocket hotels open. The first 2 hotels Agoda was considerably cheaper than the others. just doing the third hotel and virtually the same price for Agoda and rocket with Booking dearer. But on Agoda no pay at the hotel option and nonrefundable whereas Rocket is pay now but cancellable so am about to book it.

This is on again from 29/1/24 until 18/2/24.

I had a couple of bookings already made and I cancelled and rebooked. Bookings were about $30 extra but I will earn 12K points for a weekend vs 4K points. I also made a couple of other bookings I needed to make while I was at it, I can cancel if needed.

Though I have made about 20 hotel reservations in Japan for June/July and the closest Rocket got to the others was $100 dearer. The worst was $600 dearer than the hotel’s site. Makes for very expensive points.
