Am currently on one of my extended trips and needed a new SIM card.

My usual phone card costs heaps to use global roaming and I often use another international SIM card which doesn't help on this trip as it costs too much even to receive calls.

Before leaving home I found a Travelsim leaflet at my local Australia Post office and it seemed what I needed. Not over the top prices to call AUS and more importantly I could receive calls for free in most places.

Then came the following email..

Dear Postcode
It has come to our attention that customers have recently been targeted with a hoax email leading to a false TravelSIM payment page.

The email asks TravelSIM customers to purchase false discount coupons for TravelSIM recharge. When the link in the email is clicked on, a false payment page opens with a secure order form with a URL address similar to this:

https://www.plimus.com/jsp/buynow.jsp?contractId=2890668.

Under no circumstances should you click on the link, reply to the email or provide any of the requested details.

To purchase TravelSIM TopUp (recharge) visit the TravelSIM web site: TravelSIM - SIM card for international roaming or contact TravelSIM on 1300 851 676.

TravelSIM will not send you emails offering discounted coupons for TravelSIM Topups / ReCharges. Only reply to emails that come from TravelSIM email addresses – they will always end in : @travelsim.net.au

Customers who have received the email and are concerned should contact the TravelSIM Support Centre on 1300 851 676 or [email protected]

Kind Regards

TravelSIM Support

I smelled a rat as soon as I read it due to the URL and email origin so ignored it.

My response..

Thanks for your email. I received the suspicious email yesterday - saw is as suspicious straight away - been in and out of airports all day. It came from [email protected]

How did my name and email address and who know what other details become available to these people? What security does travelsim use? Should I just not use the travelsim card and demand my money paid back? I consider this to be a huge breech of privacy and security. An early and accurate response needed.

All I received was an immediate automated reply saying nothing.

I contacted my bank letting them know of a security breech and to not process any charges looking suspicious. They said to just dispute them when I return in a few months.

I'm furious that customers' details - names, email addresses and who knows what else had been leaked to a bunch of theives.

Beware of travelsim - they don't even answer emails about this.

Do you know that is has been leaked? perhaps stolen might be a better word for it?

Travelsim have been around for quite a while now and I have not heard any bad reports.
