Yet another 'travel light' news pages filler: Eight top business travel packing hacks (And since when did a 'tip' become a 'hack' ? )

I'm with him except 1 and 2. OK, his travel means taking 2 suits - which I think excessive anyway. And 5 pairs of socks??? But he's obviously never travelled on a trip where the weather will change - where you need warm as well as cold weather attire (and shoes). And he apparently never travels anywhere very cold, where a thick overcoat is required.

I fundamentally disagree with the "NEVER take checked bags" philosophy. Sure, I will go HLO if I'm going to one place for one purpose for a week or less - say Fiji for a holiday, or London or J'burg for business. I hate bag carousel waits and the risk of lost bags as much as the next guy. But if I'm going on business for 2+ weeks, or holidays and travelling around, I think its simply a false economy to go HLO.

If you go for business for a couple of weeks, then there is probably a weekend of downtime where you want to go out, casual; maybe warm, maybe hot; maybe jogging. If on holiday you'll probably go through a number of climates (but not always of course). But you'll probably want pool attire; going-out-to-dinner; sports, etc.

And even on a business trip, you might want to buy something for the kids, or a friend back home. Are you going to be one of those people who have a roll-aboard + briefcase/laptop bag AND bags of shopping stuffed into that overhead locker?

Yes, you might be able to survive with what you can cram into HLO - but for the sake of some carousel waits, on a longer trip, I'd rather be prepared for, and be comfortable in, most circumstances.

I agree - I've had to work in BKK for two weeks before heading to PEK for 4 weeks, and it went from 34C to -10C. Kind of hard to HLO when you're away for so long, and need to pack for two completely different weather scenarios.

I truly wish I could (with all the gear I travel with), but alas, when you're on the road for quite some time (often up to 8 weeks), it just isn't feasible.

Having said that though, after seeing the size of the (definitely not a carry-on) suitcase somebody rolled down the isle a few weeks back, I probably could . . . . . ;)
